Ministry with Community (MwC) is a non-profit organization located in Kalamazoo, MI. We are a daytime shelter and resource center, open 365 days a year from 6:30am-4:00pm. The mission of MwC is to empower people to make positive life changes. Position overview
The Kitchen Manager oversees the daily operations of the kitchen, including service of breakfast and lunch 365 days/year, and the staff and volunteers needed to execute the meal provision with the utmost commitment to quality, sanitation and safety. The Kitchen Manager maintains inventory and ordering of all food and necessary kitchen and dining supplies, within budgetary requirements. They must be able to manage multiple tasks within a fast-paced environment while showing care and understanding towards people experiencing poverty, homelessness, substance use disorders, mental illness and other life challenges.
The Kitchen Manager must demonstrate compassion, integrity and trust. This individual must uphold the highest standards of ethics and values in alignment with the mission of Ministry with Community.
Hours
This is a full-time, exempt position. Ministry with Community is open 6:30am-4:00pm open 7 days/week; hours may vary.
Position Requirements
· 18 years of age or older
· At least 1 year of direct kitchen management experience with awareness of local, state, and federal health and sanitation laws, as well as proper use and maintenance of kitchen equipment
· Certified Professional Food Manager certification or ability to complete training within 90 days of hire.
· Ability to communicate with others quickly and effectively. Multiple languages and sign language not required, but beneficial
· Ability to effectively use a computer for data entry, receiving and sending email, using electronic calendars, etc.
· Effective oral and written communication skills
· Intermediate experience and comfort with MS Excel and other database programs
· Comfort with computer programs: MSWord/Office
· Ability to provide self-transportation to community events, gatherings, and meetings
· Clean driving record, ability to pass MVR check
· Ability to bend, twist, stoop, lift and reach. Frequent lifting/moving objects of up to 50 pounds at one time
· Ability to see and hear the environment in order to monitor the well-being of members (those we serve), volunteers, interns, community partners/outreach workers and staff and identify adverse situations
· Ability to learn quickly (desire to continue learning) and exhibit creative problem-solving
· Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks
· Commitment to the highest level of customer service for both internal and external customers (staff, members, volunteers)
· Ability to be on your feet for an extended period
· Commitment to diversity and inclusion
· Current Serv Safe manager certification or the ability to obtain certification within 90 days of hire.
Performance Expectations:
1. First and foremost, place MwC member needs and the MwC mission front and center in all processes, decisions, tasks, work and efforts.
2. Ensures kitchen cleanliness and sanitation, all stations are stocked before and during meal periods, and stations are kept clean and organized.
3. Ensures proper usage and maintenance of kitchen equipment.
4. Oversees kitchen labor and food costs to budgetary requirements.
5. Procures needed food and other supplies and receives product by verifying invoice and freshness of merchandise.
6. Recruit and hire new staff as needed and provide training and active supervision and positive motivation to employees.
7. Ensures staff complete daily/weekly/monthly checklists with accuracy.
8. Utilize the MwC current strategic plan as the primary guide for determining the focus of all department efforts.
9. Actively support the Board of Directors and Executive Director in carrying out their strategic goals and objectives.
10. Work to establish effective relationships with our diverse members, while maintaining an environment of dignity and respect.
11. Support and uphold MwC community expectations in a timely fashion, using excellent conflict management and interpersonal communication skills.
12. Actively facilitate and contribute to kitchen staff meetings on a regular basis.
13. Actively participate in and contribute to management team and organization-wide meetings on a regular basis.
14. Other duties as assigned.
Wage and benefits
$21.00-23.00 per hour depending on experience.
