POSITION SUMMARY:
The Y is a leading nonprofit for strengthening community, and the nation’s largest provider of swim lessons to increase skill and safety in and around water. This position provides direct leadership, instruction and motivation for students in swimming classes.

Greets everyone by using names whenever possible; extends thanks whenever appropriate; makes relationship building the number one priority at all times. This position is responsible for ensuring that the mission, purpose, image and core values of the YMCA is conveyed.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Instruct swimming lessons as assigned in accordance with YMCA guidelines, having prepared lesson plans accordingly.
2. Develop positive relationships with members and participants and provide motivational support and guidance.
3. Encourage member and parent involvement and identify potential volunteers.
4. Convey information on aquatics programs and schedules and, as appropriate, refer members and participants to other programs.
5. Maintain records as required (i.e. attendance, progress reports, etc.).
6. Attend staff meetings and trainings as scheduled.
7. Follow all YMCA policies, rules, regulations and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures.
8. Complete incident and accident reports as necessary.
9. Organize and put away needed class equipment. Report damaged equipment.
10. Train and supervise class aides as assigned.
11. Carry out additional assignments and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor.
12. This job description may not be all-inclusive and duties may be modified when deemed appropriate by the CEO. Employees are expected to perform all other duties as assigned and directed by the CEO.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. At least 16 years of age.
2. Must be able to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
3. Certifications:
a. CPR for the Professional Rescuer & AED
b. Basic First Aid certification
c. YMCA swim instructor certification or equivalent or to be obtained within 6 months of employment

While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to: bend, stoop, kneel, twist, sit, reach with hands, grasp, stand, hear, speak, have finger dexterity, walk, lift up to 10 pounds, push, pull and have visual acuity. Must have ability to instruct and observe participants in proper stroke techniques as well as ability to lift equipment, and to lift a small to average size child. Responsibilities require a flexible work schedule including evening/weekend hours.
TRAINING REQUIREMENTS:
1. The following on-line Redwoods training courses are required before beginning work: Child Abuse Prevention; Bloodborne Pathogens; Slips, Trips, and Falls.
2. Certifications required within 90 days of hire: New Hire Orientation.
