Your role with us
As a phlebotomy technician at Salem Health, you play a vital role in delivering safe, accurate, and compassionate care. You’ll be the face of the laboratory; the person patients trust to guide them through testing, ensure specimens are collected correctly, and support providers with timely, reliable results. This role blends technical skill, patient interaction, and critical thinking in a fast‑paced environment where your work directly impacts diagnosis, treatment, and patient experience. Whether you’re collecting specimens, performing EKGs, or supporting our community partners in long‑term care facilities, you help uphold Salem Health’s commitment to exceptional care.
What you'll do
- Perform specimen collection including venous, capillary, arterial, swab, and breath tests, following strict infection control and safety procedures.
- Support nursing home and care facility collections by managing schedules, communicating with staff, and ensuring accurate orders and resident preparation.
- Register patients in Epic, verify insurance, release orders, and ensure all required documentation is complete and compliant.
- Perform EKGs including order verification, troubleshooting poor reads, identifying critical results, and escalating per protocol.
- Process and handle laboratory specimens according to test‑specific stability requirements, ensuring proper transport and documentation.
- Administer substances for glucose tolerance, H. pylori breath tests, and lactose tolerance testing.
- Maintain draw center operations including supply checks, equipment upkeep, and daily/weekly/monthly maintenance tasks.
- Provide exceptional customer service using AIDET, proper phone etiquette, and accurate communication with patients, providers, and care teams.
- Participate in Lean improvement work to enhance workflows, quality, and patient experience.
Required qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent, and completion of an accredited phlebotomy program or sufficient work experience to qualify for a nationally recognized certification exam.
- Phlebotomy Technician certification (PBT) required within six months of hire. ASCP, NHA, NHCO, or another approved certifying agency accepted.
- One year of phlebotomy experience or successful completion of an accredited phlebotomy program.
Additional information
- Experience in a clinical, medical office, or research setting preferred.
- Clinical rotation at Salem Hospital preferred.
