Vonlane is seeking an experienced Diesel Bus Mechanic to join our Austin maintenance operation supporting our fleet of luxury MCI and Prevost motorcoaches.
This is a full-time, hands-on maintenance position responsible for preventive maintenance, diagnostics, repairs, and overall vehicle readiness. The position will primarily work an overnight schedule, approximately 8:00 p.m.–4:00 a.m., when our coaches are off the road and available for scheduled maintenance and repairs.
We are looking for a skilled, dependable mechanic who is comfortable working independently, takes ownership of repairs from diagnosis through completion, and understands the importance of keeping commercial vehicles safe, reliable, and ready for daily service.
Compensation ranges from $32–$37 per hour depending on experience, with opportunities for overtime based on fleet and operational needs.
What You'll Do
- Perform mileage-based preventive maintenance on MCI and Prevost motorcoaches.
- Diagnose and repair diesel engine, transmission, HVAC, electrical, air brake, suspension, and other heavy-duty vehicle systems.
- Inspect and replace brakes, suspension components, belts, hoses, pulleys, alternators, and other components as necessary.
- Troubleshoot engine and vehicle fault codes and determine appropriate corrective action.
- Utilize OEM diagnostic software, including Prevost Tech Tool and Cummins Insite.
- Perform preventive and reactive HVAC maintenance and repairs.
- Complete general motorcoach repairs involving doors, exterior panels, lighting, plumbing systems, seats, parcel racks, refrigeration, and other onboard equipment.
- Inspect, rotate, and replace tires as necessary.
- Identify developing mechanical issues before they result in roadside failures or service interruptions.
- Assist with roadside troubleshooting and emergency repairs when needed.
- Accurately document completed work and close assigned work orders.
- Communicate repair status, parts needs, and developing maintenance issues to fleet leadership.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
What We're Looking For
- Hands-on diesel or heavy-duty vehicle maintenance experience.
- Experience working on motorcoaches, transit buses, heavy trucks, or similar commercial vehicles strongly preferred.
- Strong diesel diagnostic and troubleshooting skills.
- Experience with Cummins and/or Volvo diesel engines preferred.
- Experience with Allison transmissions preferred.
- Working knowledge of air brake and suspension systems.
- HVAC experience strongly preferred.
- Strong electrical troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to independently diagnose mechanical problems and determine appropriate repairs.
- Comfortable using laptops, diagnostic software, work-order systems, and mobile technology.
- Ability to read and understand repair manuals, wiring diagrams, maintenance procedures, and technical documentation.
- Dependable and comfortable working independently during overnight hours.
- CDL strongly preferred. Candidates without a CDL must be willing and able to obtain one.
- ASE diesel and/or transit bus certifications preferred.
- MACS refrigerant certification preferred.
Schedule
This position is expected to primarily work approximately 8:00 p.m.–4:00 a.m.
Because Vonlane operates scheduled passenger service throughout the day, overnight maintenance is an important part of ensuring coaches are repaired, serviced, and ready for the following day's operation.
The position is expected to work a consistent full-time schedule, with some flexibility required based on fleet needs. Overtime opportunities will be available and may include additional hours, weekends, or emergency maintenance support.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work on and around motorcoaches in all necessary positions, including standing, kneeling, overhead, and underneath vehicles.
- Ability to safely use heavy-duty maintenance tools and diagnostic equipment.
- Ability to regularly lift and move approximately 20–50 pounds.
- Ability to perform the physical requirements associated with commercial vehicle maintenance in a shop environment.
