Position Summary
We are seeking energetic, community-minded individuals to join our team as part-time Library Assistants. Operating in a fast-paced environment, these roles provide exceptional, customer-focused service to library users. Whether helping adults navigate digital tools or fostering a love for reading in young children, you will play a vital role in connecting the public to library materials, technology, and engaging community programs.
Candidates may be considered for placement in Information Services (focusing on adult/senior services, technology troubleshooting, and account administration) or Youth Services (focusing on child development, creative programming, and youth collection management).
Core Responsibilities (Across Both Roles)
- Patron Services & Account Management: Provide welcoming, attentive care in person and over the phone. Assist patrons with general directional inquiries, Evergreen catalog accounts, library card issuance, hold placement, renewals, and recording fines/fees.
- Technology Instruction: Troubleshoot and guide the public through the use of essential technology equipment (printing, scanning, copying, faxing, and Wi-Fi pairing) as well as navigating library apps, databases, and streaming services.
- Collection & Display Maintenance: Ensure physical and digital collections remain accessible and organized. Help curate attractive, seasonal library displays and promotional exhibits.
- Promotion & Community Outreach: Actively advocate for library events, databases, and materials during patron interactions. Collect relevant library metrics and statistics to measure engagement.
Department-Specific Duties
- Information Services: Serve adult and senior populations; assist with references and readers' advisory; utilize creative marketing applications (such as or Microsoft Publisher) to construct event advertising and manage various social media platforms.
- Youth Services: Partner with the Youth Services Manager to design and lead interactive activities for children of all ages (such as story times, art sessions, reading challenges, and class visits); represent the library off-site at local schools, daycares, and local organizations; assist in evaluating and weeding the youth collection.
Education & Certification Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent (a college degree is welcome but not mandatory).
- The ability to obtain and maintain a Librarian Certificate 6 (LC 6) following the guidelines.
Preferred Skills & Experience
- Robust customer service experience (prior experience in a public library setting is highly preferred).
- Strong communication skills in English (verbal and written); bilingual capabilities are a plus.
- A natural curiosity and interest in contemporary literature, music, media, and emerging technology trends.
- For Youth Services applicants: Background experience working directly with children and orchestrating youth group activities is strictly required.
Working Conditions
Positions require active mobility throughout a multi-level service ecosystem, including regular bending, reaching, and the capacity to safely push or lift library bins and utility carts weighing at least 20 pounds. Final candidates must complete a comprehensive background check (Youth Services roles require a specialized childhood-safe screening clearance).
