Job Summary
The Medical Billing Specialist plays a crucial role in supporting efficient medical billing workflows within the practice. The Billing Specialist is responsible for accurately processing medical claims from start to finish on an electronic medical record system. The position includes reviewing medical documentation, ensuring accurate billing, verifying insurance and patient payment postings, assisting staff and patients with billing related questions, and ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations while maintaining patient confidentiality. The individual must be familiar with third party billing, payment, and accounts receivable procedures. They must possess expertise with medical billing functionality in an electronic medical record system, and possess strong knowledge of CPT and ICD 10 billing (preferably in Ob/Gyn). The ability to adapt to the ever-changing landscape of healthcare billing is essential.
Responsibilities
- Reviews and scrubs claims daily for submission to 3rd party payers.
- Adds or modifies patient and insurance demographics.
- Reviews posting of all insurance payments for accuracy; communicates any discrepancies to the appropriate party.
- Makes appropriate adjustments and transfer of balances when needed.
- Counsels patients regarding high deductible policies and expectations for payment.
- Reconciles payments.
- Flags encounters for missing ICD-10 codes, CPT codes, or documentation.
- Prepares and completes bank deposits.
- Processes patients refunds.
- Processes patient credit card payments.
- Initiates inquiries on claim denials or adjustments as needed.
- Regularly follows up on outstanding accounts receivable.
- Responsible for knowledge of insurance company policies and regulations that impact claims processing.
- Answers inquiries from patients, insurance carriers, and staff regarding patient accounts and billings.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Polished communication and interpersonal skills
- Medical billing skills; certifications in medical billing and coding are helpful but not required
- Medical terminology knowledge
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
- Competence in working with digital files
- Strong math skills
- Careful attention to detail

- The ability to learn and adapt based on the demands of the position

Experience/Certifications Needed:
- Experience in a medical billing role; Ob/Gyn experience is a plus but NOT required.
- Athena EMR experience is a plus, but NOT required.
- Salary commensurate with experience and certifications.
