JOB SUMMARY
The laborer performs tasks involving physical labor at building, highway, and heavy construction projects, tunnel and shaft excavations, and demolition sites. May operate hand and power tools of all types, including air hammers, earth tampers, cement mixers, small mechanical hoists, surveying and measuring equipment, and other construction instruments. Duties may include site preparation, trenching, bracing excavations, erecting scaffolding, cleaning rubble and debris, and removing asbestos, lead, and other hazardous materials. Various Federal and State Licenses and Certification are required for environmental work.
CHARACTERISTIC JOB TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Cleans and prepares construction sites to eliminate hazards and maintain high-quality housekeeping.
▪
Reads and interprets plans, instructions, and specifications to determine work activities; coordinates with foreman and superintendent as required.
▪
Controls traffic near and around work zones.
▪
Signals equipment operators to assist with alignment and movement of machinery, equipment, and materials.
▪
Digs ditches or trenches, backfills excavations, and compacts and levels earth to grade specifications.
▪
Positions, joins, aligns, and seals structural components such as concrete wall sections and pipes.
▪
Measures, marks, and records openings and distances to lay out work areas.
▪
Performs environmental abatement and remediation tasks as qualified.
▪
Loads, unloads, identifies, and distributes building materials, machinery, and tools.
▪
Erects and disassembles scaffolding, shoring braces, barricades, ramps, and temporary structures.
▪
Builds and positions concrete forms and dismantles them after use.
▪
Participates in company or union-provided training to improve skills.
▪
Completes field reporting as required.
▪
Performs all other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS
▪
Knowledge of construction materials, methods, and tools used in building and roadway work.
▪
Ability to understand and interpret blueprints, plans, and technical documents.
▪
Knowledge of construction math and its applications.
▪
Proficiency with machines and tools, including operation, maintenance, and safe use.
▪
Understanding of engineering principles as applied to construction tasks.
▪
Ability to communicate effectively in English (oral and written).
▪
Physical ability to climb, lift at least 40 pounds, balance, walk, stoop, and handle materials.
▪
Must be able to pass minimum fitness for duty medical examination as environmental work requires use of respirators for extended periods. OSHA 10-hour Construction Safety Certification (minimum).

Acquires and maintains Asbestos Worker License from the NYS Department of Labor and any Federal OSHA or EPA certifications or licenses for the handling of hazardous materials. These include OSHA HAZWOPER and EPA Lead and Mold Abatement

Pay: $37.00 - $47.00 per hour
