Technical Advisor – Mobile Fleet Support

Bains Towing & Recovery is seeking an experienced In-House Diesel Mechanic to serve as the primary technical resource for our team of Mobile Diesel Mechanics operating throughout our service areas.
Unlike a traditional shop mechanic position, this role is centered around technical support, diagnostics, repair planning, and fleet coordination. The successful candidate will leverage extensive diesel repair experience to assist field technicians in diagnosing complex mechanical issues, recommending repair procedures, identifying required parts, and ensuring repairs are completed safely, efficiently, and correctly.
This is an ideal opportunity for a highly experienced diesel technician who enjoys solving difficult mechanical problems, mentoring other technicians, and helping drive operational excellence without spending every day performing physical repairs.
What You'll Do
Technical Support & Diagnostics
- Serve as the primary technical advisor for Mobile Diesel Mechanics in the field.
- Assist technicians over the phone and through electronic communication with diagnosing complex mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, fuel, emissions, and drivability issues.
- Guide technicians through repair procedures and troubleshooting processes.
- Review diagnostic information and recommend efficient repair solutions.
- Help determine whether repairs can be completed in the field or require shop service.
- Provide technical expertise on Class 8 tractors, trailers, and heavy-duty diesel equipment.
Mobile Fleet Support
- Support the daily operations of the Mobile Diesel Mechanics by providing technical guidance and repair recommendations.
- Coordinate with technicians to minimize equipment downtime.
- Assist in prioritizing emergency and scheduled repairs.
- Help ensure repairs meet company quality standards and customer expectations.
- Monitor repair progress and provide additional technical assistance as needed.
- Work closely with the Service Manager to improve technician efficiency and fleet performance.
Parts & Repair Coordination
- Research and identify replacement parts for repairs.
- Assist technicians with locating hard-to-find components.
- Coordinate with vendors and suppliers regarding parts availability.
- Review estimates and recommend cost-effective repair solutions.
- Help maintain parts inventory for commonly used repair items.
Shop & Administrative Support
- Review repair orders for accuracy and completeness.
- Assist with preventative maintenance scheduling.
- Maintain maintenance records and repair documentation.
- Support warranty claims and vendor communications when applicable.
- Provide recommendations for improving shop processes and field operations.
- Perform occasional hands-on repairs when operational needs require.
Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years of heavy-duty diesel mechanic experience, preferably working on Class 8 tractor-trailers.
- Expert knowledge of diesel engines, electrical systems, air brake systems, aftertreatment systems, suspension, steering, driveline, transmissions, and hydraulic systems.
- Extensive troubleshooting and diagnostic experience.
- Strong understanding of Cummins, Detroit Diesel, PACCAR, Volvo, Mack, Caterpillar, and other heavy-duty diesel platforms.
- Experience supporting or mentoring other technicians preferred.
- Ability to interpret service manuals, wiring diagrams, and diagnostic software.
- Strong computer skills and experience documenting repairs.
- Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
- Valid driver's license required.
- CDL preferred but not required.

Schedule
- Full-Time

Pay: $25.00 - $32.21 per hour
