Position Summary
The Lead Perinatal Sonographer performs standard, specialty, and complex obstetric diagnostic sonographic examinations with a high level of expertise, producing superior-quality studies under a variety of conditions. This role is responsible for the operation and maintenance of ultrasound equipment, performing high-risk obstetrical ultrasound studies, and supporting accurate image documentation for physician interpretation.
This individual will also provide leadership through orientation, training, mentorship, and feedback for sonography staff while supporting quality improvement initiatives aligned with Nemours Children's goals and standards of excellence.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform high-quality and comprehensive diagnostic ultrasound imaging exams in accordance with department protocols under the supervision of MFM physicians
- Obtain and integrate pertinent patient history and clinical information to support accurate diagnostic outcomes
- Educate and prepare patients and families for procedures while providing reassurance and compassionate care
- Ensure proper patient identification, image labeling, PACS interaction, and documentation
- Communicate ultrasound findings and clinical information effectively to interpreting physicians
- Support equipment troubleshooting, maintenance, safety, and quality assurance initiatives
- Mentor and train sonographers, students, and new team members
- Collaborate effectively with physicians, nurses, and multidisciplinary teams to optimize patient care coordination
- Maintain strong communication with patients, families, and clinical staff regarding scheduling and procedural updates
- Support departmental operations, inventory management, and compliance with hospital policies and safety standards
Qualifications
Required
- Completion of an approved Ultrasound Program beyond high school
- Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) in Obstetrics & Gynecology (OB/GYN)
- Fetal Echo Certification
- AHA BLS Certification
- Minimum of five years of experience in MFM or women's health
- Strong leadership, communication, and critical-thinking skills
Preferred
- Bachelor degree in related field
- Nuchal Translucency Certification
- Florida State Radiation License if ARRT certified
