Softball Umpire - $32.25/game - Educational Benefits Provided
Underdog Sports Leagues is hiring part-time Softball Umpires to work our adult 21+ softball leagues in Portland.
We pay $32.25/game, offer a flexible part-time schedule, and offer an education benefit: eligible staff can earn $500 toward college tuition, student loan debt, or a child’s 529 education savings plan after working 100 hours in a calendar year.
You do not need previous umpiring experience. Underdog trains and certifies our own umpires on our rules, mechanics, and procedures. But this is not a “learn baseball/softball from scratch” role. You should already have a solid understanding of baseball or softball and be comfortable making calls in real time.
This is an active, independent role for someone who knows the game, communicates clearly, and can confidently manage an adult recreational softball game. You will work games as the solo umpire, not as part of a crew, so you need to be comfortable being the authority on the field in a friendly, approachable way. You should be confident, but not arrogant.
Our softball leagues run April through October.
Pay, Schedule & Education Benefit
- $32.25/game (games are 1.5 hours)
- Flexible part-time schedule, generally 5–20 hours per week
- $500 education benefit after working 100 hours in a calendar year
- Benefit can be used toward college tuition, student loan debt, or a child’s 529 education savings plan

Schedule Details
Softball games are scheduled every 1.5 hours.
Weeknight shifts do not start earlier than 6 PM. Umpires generally work 2–3 games during a weeknight shift.
Weekend shifts can start as early as 11 AM and run as late as 9 PM. Umpires generally work 3–5 games during a weekend shift.
We work with complicated schedules. You tell us when you’re available, and we work around that. We have room for people who want one shift a week and for people who want as many games as possible.
What We’re Looking For
We are looking for dependable, outgoing people who know baseball or softball and are comfortable taking ownership of a game.
You should be:
- Reliable and punctual
- Comfortable being the person in charge on the field
- Confident making calls and rulings
- Able to communicate clearly with players and captains
- Proactive, not reactive
- Comfortable moving throughout the game. Our umpires do not just stand behind the plate — they are constantly moving around the field and may cover 1–2 miles per game.
- Good at staying calm when players disagree
- Friendly, but able to be firm when needed
You do not need official umpiring experience, but you do need real baseball or softball knowledge. We’ll train you on Underdog rules, systems, mechanics, and procedures, but you should already understand the game well enough to make calls, explain rulings, and be the authority on the field.
You also must:
- Have reliable transportation
- Be able to carry umpire equipment to and from your car
- Be over 18 years old
