Position Summary
Harbor Haven Residential Services is seeking compassionate, dependable, and motivated Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) to provide person-centered support to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. DSPs play a vital role in helping individuals achieve greater independence, participate in their communities, and live meaningful lives while ensuring their health, safety, and well-being.
Responsibilities
- Provide support with activities of daily living, including personal care, grooming, dressing, meal preparation, housekeeping, and medication administration (when trained).
- Assist individuals with community outings, appointments, shopping, recreational activities, employment, and social engagement.
- Promote independence, dignity, self-advocacy, and informed choice.
- Follow Individualized Support Plans (ISP), Behavior Support Plans (BSP), and healthcare plans.
- Utilize positive behavior support strategies and approved de-escalation techniques.
- Accurately complete daily documentation, medication records, and incident reports.
- Maintain a safe, clean, and supportive home environment.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, nurses, case managers, guardians, and interdisciplinary team members.
- Respond appropriately to medical and behavioral emergencies in accordance with company policies and training.
Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation preferred.
- Ability to pass required background checks and pre-employment screenings.
- Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Preferred Experience
We are seeking candidates with experience supporting individuals who require behavioral, medical, or developmental supports, including:
- Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD)
- Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
- Mental health and dual diagnoses
- Behavioral support needs
Experience working with individuals who may exhibit:
- Verbal aggression
- Physical aggression
- Self-injurious behaviors
- Property destruction
- Elopement or wandering
- Crisis behaviors requiring positive behavioral interventions
Experience with:
- Positive Behavior Supports (PBS)
- Behavior Support Plans (BSPs)
- De-escalation and crisis intervention techniques
- Person-centered care
- Medication administration
- Activities of Daily Living (ADLs)
- Community integration and skill building
Previous experience as a Direct Support Professional (DSP), Behavioral Technician, Caregiver, Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Home Health Aide (HHA), Mental Health Technician, or in a related healthcare or human services role is strongly preferred.
