The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking a Maintenance Mechanic 3 to support the preventative and corrective maintenance programs within the Northwest Region Facilities Department. In this role, the successful candidate will perform skilled and semi-skilled work in a variety of trades, including mechanical and electrical repairs, building retrofits, and facility maintenance activities. This position is responsible for coordinating materials acquisition, maintaining required documentation, and ensuring job safety within assigned work parameters. The Maintenance Mechanic 3 plays a critical role in sustaining safe, efficient, and reliable facilities that support WSDOT’s mission of providing safe, reliable, and cost-effective transportation options for Washington communities and businesses.
What to Expect
The typical schedule for this position is Tuesday through Friday, 40 hours per week; however, the successful candidate may be required to work scheduled or unscheduled overtime and respond to emergency situations based on business needs.
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Maintenance Mechanic 3 will:

Perform preventative and corrective maintenance on plumbing, electrical, HVAC, fire, security, and building systems, including roofs, doors, windows, gates, and fences.

Inspect, test, repair, and maintain mechanical systems and equipment, including compressed air, refrigeration, heating systems, and motorized equipment.

Install and maintain door hardware, locksets, cores, panic hardware, and automatic door closures to ensure facility security and functionality.

Conduct equipment checks, replace filters, clean equipment, document discrepancies, and verify efficient system operation.

Operate a service vehicle to travel between multiple work sites and transport tools, equipment, and materials needed to complete assigned duties.

Receive, track, and complete service requests while maintaining accurate records and updates within the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).

Perform landscape and grounds maintenance activities, including snow removal, debris removal, drain clearing, irrigation system maintenance, and operation of landscaping equipment and tools.

Support operational and safety activities by ordering parts and supplies, maintaining organized work areas, attending safety meetings and trainings, and maintaining assigned vehicles and equipment.
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
Technical Expertise:
-
Experience in commercial building maintenance or construction trade.
-
Experience reading and interpreting blueprints and plans.

In addition to the above, the following are also required:

A valid driver’s license and the ability to operate state-owned vehicles.

Ability to maneuver and transport various materials and/or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.

Ability to work in hazardous conditions, loud noise, heat, cold, high voltage electricity, elevations, and confined spaces.
-
Ability to operate and work a motor vehicle, trailers, scissor lift, forklifts, and man lifts.
-
Ability to work from a ladder over 10 feet.
-
Ability to determine proper PPE requirements for any given activity and use it consistently.
-
Ability to evaluate conditions of the building envelope, environmental, and automation systems and equipment.
-
Ability to work scheduled and unscheduled overtime based on operational and emergency response needs.
-
Ability to respond to emergency call-outs and perform duties outside of regular business hours when required.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also demonstrate:

Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Building Operator Certification (level one).

In addition to the salary range listed, a general wage increase of 2% will be applied for all state employees on July 1, 2026.
-
The salary listed includes the legislatively approved 5% salary premium for positions located in King County, as well as an additional 10% Group C assignment pay.

In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position. For union-represented positions, more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements. Information on other compensation types for non-represented positions can be found in Chapter 357-28 of the Washington Administrative Code.
