Job Functions and Duties
- Develops lesson plans and teaching materials according to the curriculum guide and syllabus.
- Conducts classes and provides instruction based on student learning needs.
- Creates a supportive learning environment that respects and accommodates students’ cultural differences and needs.
- Implements effective class management techniques and strategies.
- Communicates the policies and procedures of NYGC with the students.
- Maintains records of student attendance, assessment scores, lesson plans, and request forms.
- Evaluates student progress through assessments and class performances.
- Organizes and conducts one cultural field trip per semester during scheduled class time.
- Collaborates with colleagues in developing and implementing curriculum or sharing teaching resources and ideas.
- Stays current with ESL teaching methods, resources, and materials by meeting the minimum requirements of professional development responsibilities.
- Attends faculty meetings monthly.
- Follows the policies and procedures of New York General Consulting.
- For Test Prep instructors only: provides test prep instruction for students who are preparing for standardized English language tests such as TOEFL or GRE. This can involve teaching test-taking strategies, reviewing test content, and providing practice exercises.
Faculty Qualification
Faculty need to have a BPSS ESOL license to teach with NYGC.
Faculty need to have minimum 1-year teaching experience in a postsecondary institution.
General ESL Program and English in Practice (EIP) Program Faculty
Educational Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree as the minimum qualification or higher.
- ESL/EFL/TESOL certificate (required if master’s degree is not in ESL or TESOL) that includes:
- Language teaching methodology
- The nature of language/languages (e.g., introduction to linguistics)
- The structure of English (e.g., syntax, phonology, morphology, discourse)
- Second language acquisition
- Intercultural communication (e.g., sociolinguistics, cross-cultural studies)
- Practicum experience
Experience Requirements
- Minimum one year of ESL/EFL teaching experience in a postsecondary institution.
Proficiency and Demonstration Requirements
- Excellent English proficiency demonstrated through:
- Diploma from an English-medium degree program, OR
- Official English proficiency documentation (IELTS, TOEFL, or Cambridge English Qualifications), OR
- Assessment during interview and demonstration lessons (evaluating clarity, accuracy, and instructional communication skills)
- Successful completion of demonstration lesson. During the interview process, a prospective instructor will be required to teach a demonstration class where supervisors and other instructors evaluate teaching, classroom management, and language proficiency skills.
