Position Summary
The Senior Staff Accountant plays a critical role in ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of financial operations. This position owns key components of the month-end close process, leads complex reconciliations, and supports financial reporting and audit readiness. The role requires advanced proficiency in QuickBooks, strong analytical capability, and the ability to operate with minimal oversight in a fast-paced, multi-entity environment.
Key Responsibilities
Month-End Close & General Ledger Ownership
- Lead assigned portions of the month-end and year-end close processes
- Prepare, review, and post complex journal entries with supporting documentation
- Maintain and reconcile general ledger accounts within QuickBooks
- Ensure timely and accurate financial data across entities and locations
Financial Reporting & Analysis
- Generate and review financial statements (P&L, balance sheet, cash flow)
- Analyze variances and provide insights to leadership on financial performance
- Assist in preparing internal reporting packages for executive leadership and stakeholders
- Support budgeting and forecasting activities as needed
Reconciliations & Accuracy
- Perform and review advanced bank, credit card, and account reconciliations
- Identify, investigate, and resolve discrepancies independently
- Ensure all balance sheet accounts are fully reconciled and supported monthly
Accounts Payable & Receivable Oversight
- Provide oversight and guidance on AP/AR processes to ensure accuracy and efficiency
- Review vendor payments, billing activity, and cash applications within QuickBooks
- Partner cross-functionally to resolve escalated billing or payment issues
Compliance, Audit & Controls
- Ensure adherence to internal controls, company policies, and GAAP standards
- Prepare audit schedules, documentation, and respond to auditor requests
- Maintain audit-ready financial records and organized documentation
Process Improvement & Systems
- Identify and implement process improvements within QuickBooks and accounting workflows
- Partner with leadership on system optimization initiatives and reporting enhancements
- Support system transitions or integrations (e.g., ERP or payroll/HRIS systems like Paylocity)
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or related field
- 4–7+ years of progressive accounting experience
- Advanced proficiency in QuickBooks (Online or Desktop required)
- CPA or CPA-track (Preferred)
- Experience in multi-entity and/or high-growth environments (Preferred)
- Background in transportation, fleet services, or operationally intensive industries (Preferred)
- Experience in private equity-backed or high-growth organizations (Preferred)
- Experience supporting system implementations or process transformations (Preferred)
Skills & Competencies
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting principles
- Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, lookups, data analysis)
- High attention to detail with strong ownership mentality
- Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills
- Effective communicator with ability to partner across departments
Work Environment & Expectations
- Must be onsite at Sterling, VA or Hagerstown MD locations.
- Ability to meet critical deadlines during close cycles
- Occasional extended hours during month-end, year-end, or audits
Pay: From $65,000.00 per year
