If you are eager to enter the medical field and would like to be trained as an Exam Technician and Optical Assistant, Dr. Hernandez Optometry is seeking a highly motivated candidate with excellent oral and written communication skills to effectively assist in patient care.
Applicants must have excellent verbal communication skills, the ability to multi-task, be bilingual in English/Spanish, self-motivated, and willing to learn all aspects of patient care and optical services. The ideal candidate must work closely with Optometrists and staff to support the delivery and maintenance of excellent quality patient care.

Major Position Responsibilities and Functions:
- Greet patients in a professional and pleasant manner.
- Responsible for examination room preparation including, but not limited to, calibrating machines, disinfecting equipment, preparing patient charts, and documenting testing results.
- Perform pre-testing used in assessing overall eye health. Testing may include color vision, depth perception, peripheral vision, glaucoma screenings, eye pressure testing, corneal measurements, and other diagnostic testing as directed by the Optometrist.
- Review patient health history and accurately document information to assist the doctor with assessment and treatment recommendations.
- Assist with ordering contact lens prescriptions and provide patient education, including contact lens insertion/removal training, proper wear, care, and maintenance.
- Responsible for checking in and inspecting spectacle and contact lens orders, verifying prescriptions, lens measurements (PDs/segment heights), and overall quality of products received.
- Assist and train in our in-office optical laboratory, including learning how to edge lenses, tint eyeglass lenses, operate optical lab equipment, perform lens inspections, verify prescriptions, complete quality control checks, and assist with preparing eyewear orders on premises.
- Maintain proper inventory of frames, including pricing frames, organizing inventory, assisting with frame selection displays, and ensuring the optical area remains clean and presentable.
- Maintain steady and efficient patient flow throughout the clinic.
- Dispense spectacle orders, including proper frame fitting, lens verification, multifocal testing, frame adjustments, patient education, and ensuring overall satisfaction with eyewear.
- Assist with frame repairs, adjustments, and minor eyewear maintenance.
- Ensure efficient and effective communication with optical labs and vendors.
- Perform recall tasks including follow-up on missed appointments and patients who have not picked up glasses or contact lens orders.
- Complete follow-up calls after glasses/contact lenses have been dispensed to confirm patient satisfaction.
- Review all forms and documentation to ensure patient records are complete after each visit.
- Provide patient education and assist with scheduling recommended follow-up care.
- Responsible for clinic opening/closing duties, including securing the facility at the end of assigned shifts.
- Maintain compliance with HIPAA standards and observe strict patient confidentiality.
- Perform other job duties as assigned.
Position Requirements:
- This position requires scheduled shifts at both our La Puente and Duarte locations; applicant must have reliable transportation.
- 1+ year experience working in a medical office preferred.
- Optical or lab experience is a plus, but not required — training will be provided.
- Must have a willingness to learn optical skills including eyewear adjustments, lens measurements, frame selection, and in-office lab work.
- Ability to provide excellent patient service and work well with patients of all ages.
- Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
- Bilingual English/Spanish required.
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
