About BGC Metro North’s Music Program:The Music Program within BGC Metro North focuses on helping youth develop social-emotional and workforce skills through production, composition, lyric writing, beat making, instrumental exploration, and performance.
Within our music spaces, youth are able to access a suite of contemporary instruments like guitar, bass, and drumkit, as well as digital production stations outfitted with professional grade software. Staff within our music spaces are equipped to facilitate any style of music or medium of music-making that youth show interest in, while maintaining a positive, inclusive environment for our youth.
Position Overview:
We are seeking an enthusiastic music professional to join our team as Assistant Music Specialist, working out of our Wakefield Teen Center. This position is ideal for those passionate about youth development and skilled in music production and instrumental instruction. Staff members play a key role in helping youth from grades 5-12 explore their musical interests, build technical skills, and express themselves in a supportive, inclusive environment.
The Assistant Music Specialist will be responsible for facilitating music programming within one of our designated music spaces within the Wakefield Teen Center, as well as maintaining music program equipment and areas.
Key Responsibilities:
- Facilitate Music Programming: Lead engaging sessions in music production using provided materials and procedures (e.g., beat making, recording, editing), while also supporting youth who wish to develop their skills on instruments such as piano, guitar, drums, etc.
- Support Youth Development: Create a safe and welcoming environment where teens can explore music as a tool for personal growth, community building, and creative expression.
- Maintaining Equipment and Space: Keep the music space clean and tour-ready, and ensure that all equipment is checked over and returned at the end of programming hours.
- Event and Performance Support: Assist with planning and facilitating youth showcases and other performance opportunities.
- Reporting Program Success: Utilize data tracking tools to provide accurate measures of youth engagement, program success, and long term member retention
- Program Adaptation: Offer feedback on programming and adjust content and approaches based on youth engagement and response.
- Cross-Program Flexibility: Support other music program spaces or events as needed, contributing to a strong and consistent presence across all related sites.
- Other tasks & projects as assigned.
Qualifications:
- High School diploma or equivalent required.
- Bachelor’s degree in Music, Music Education, Music Production, or equivalent experience preferred
- Minimum of 2 years experience working with youth
Skills and experience:
- Ability to guide and support youth in both digital and instrumental music-making.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and relate to diverse groups of teens.
- Flexibility to support programming across various locations or events as needed.
- IT and computer skills relevant to operating and troubleshooting program materials
- Knowledge of child development and behavior management techniques
- Ability to plan and implement age-appropriate activities
- Ability to maintain a safe and healthy environment for children
- Commitment to ongoing professional development and learning
Organization-wide responsibilities:
Works within legal, regulatory, accreditation and ethical practice standards relevant to the position and as established by the Boys & Girls Club; follows safe practices required for the position; complies with appropriate BGC policies and procedures; fulfills any training required by BGC, as appropriate; brings potential matters of non-compliance to the attention of the supervisor or other appropriate BGC staff.

- Hours: 1pm - 6pm Monday - Friday with monthly half days in accordance with the Wakefield and Stoneham Public School schedules.
