Job Summary
The Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) administers evidence-based therapeutic techniques and interventions designed to improve, maintain, or restore physical function. Serving individuals affected by age, injury, disease, or congenital conditions, this acute/inpatient role focuses on providing safe, effective, and high-quality therapy services to support patient recovery and functional independence.
Essential Functions & Key Responsibilities
- Clinical Collaboration: Assists the Physical Therapist (PT) in evaluating treatment plan effectiveness and collaborates on necessary adjustments to optimize patient outcomes.
- Therapeutic Interventions: Implements targeted interventions focusing on posture, balance, locomotion, strength, endurance, flexibility, coordination, pain management, and daily functional abilities.
- Modality Administration: Administers treatment methods and modalities under the direct supervision of a licensed Physical Therapist, ensuring strict alignment with current physical therapy practices.
- Progress Monitoring: Monitors patient progress and provides timely, detailed feedback to the supervising PT regarding patient responses and treatment efficacy.
- Patient & Family Education: Provides clear patient education on therapeutic exercises, techniques, and self-management strategies that promote recovery.
- Culturally Competent Care: Ensures treatment approaches are tailored to the patient’s age, developmental level, cultural background, and individual recovery goals.
- Accurate Documentation: Completes clear, concise, and accurate electronic documentation of patient care (including treatment plans, interventions, progress notes, and discharge recommendations) adhering to organizational and regulatory standards.
- Interdisciplinary Teamwork: Collaborates with an interdisciplinary healthcare team to ensure a coordinated approach to care, including active participation in discharge planning and recommendations for ongoing supportive services.
- Safety & Compliance: Maintains a clean, safe clinical environment for patients and staff by strictly adhering to infection control and safety protocols.
- Operational Excellence: Complies with all facility policies and standards; maintains regular and reliable attendance; performs other clinical and administrative duties as assigned.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Experience: 0–1 years of experience in a physical therapy setting required. (New graduates are welcome to apply!)
- Licensure: Active Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) license in the state of New Mexico (or eligible for state licensure) required.
- Certification: Basic Life Support (BCLS) certification required.
- Work Authorization: Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. for any employer. This position is not eligible for immigration sponsorship now or in the future.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Robust knowledge of therapeutic techniques, modalities, and clinical interventions used in acute/inpatient physical therapy.
- Proven ability to work collaboratively with a supervising Physical Therapist and a broader interdisciplinary healthcare team.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to effectively interact with patients, families, and colleagues.
- High level of organizational skill and attention to detail for precise clinical documentation.
- Strong commitment to maintaining patient confidentiality (HIPAA) and adhering to legal/regulatory healthcare standards.
- Physical stamina and strength necessary to safely assist patients with therapeutic activities, transfers, and exercises.
