The Town of Wappinger is hiring a Building Inspector II who is responsible for enforcing local building and zoning laws, as well as the New York State Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code. This role ensures compliance with standards for new construction and the condition, occupancy, maintenance, conservation, rehabilitation, and renewal of existing buildings and premises.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
- Works collaboratively with the Building Department team, including another Building Inspector II, to administer and enforce the New York State Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code, local zoning regulations, and other applicable laws and ordinances.
- Reviews building permit applications, plans, and specifications to determine compliance with applicable building codes, zoning regulations, plumbing requirements, and the Multiple Residence Law.
- Conducts inspections of buildings and structures during construction, renovation, and repair to ensure compliance with approved plans, permits, and applicable codes; reviews plan revisions submitted during construction.
- Issues building permits and certificates of occupancy upon verification of compliance with all applicable requirements.
- Provides guidance and technical assistance to contractors, design professionals, property owners, and the public regarding code requirements, permitting processes, and applicable regulations.
- Inspects existing buildings and structures to ensure continued compliance with safety standards and applicable codes.
- Coordinates the review of plans with other municipal departments and agencies as needed, identifies deficiencies, and communicates required corrections to applicants and design professionals.
- Reviews revised plans and documentation to verify that identified deficiencies have been satisfactorily addressed.
- Identifies unsafe or hazardous conditions, issues notices of violation or corrective action, and coordinates enforcement actions, including condemnation proceedings when necessary.
- Maintains accurate records of permits, inspections, certificates, enforcement actions, fees collected, and related departmental activities; prepares reports as required.
- Investigates complaints regarding potential building code, zoning, or property maintenance violations and assists with enforcement actions and legal proceedings when necessary.
- Reviews permit applications for zoning compliance, including setbacks, lot coverage, sign regulations, and other dimensional requirements; identifies when zoning variances may be required.
- May inspect plumbing systems, fixtures, drainage, and related work to ensure compliance with approved plans and applicable codes.
- May assist in investigating suspicious fires and preparing reports as required.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates must meet one of the following qualifications:
1. Bachelor's Degree
- Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited or New York State recognized college or university in Engineering, Architecture, Building Science, or a closely related field; and
- Two (2) years of full-time experience supervising building construction as a Building Contractor, Construction Superintendent, or Construction Foreman.
2. High School Diploma or Equivalent
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED); and
- Six (6) years of full-time experience supervising building construction as a Building Contractor, Construction Superintendent, or Construction Foreman.
3. Equivalent Combination
- An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience sufficient to meet the requirements above.
ADDITIONAL MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be NYS Code Enforcement Official (CEO) Certified or ability to obtain certification within 6 months
- Possession of a valid New York State driver’s license at the time of appointment and maintained throughout employment.
SALARY: $70,000-$75,000/year. Position is paid at an hourly rate equivalent to the range.
EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Full time, 35 hours per week. Monday-Friday 8:30am-4:00pm. This position is eligible for full benefits - health insurance, vision, dental, retirement, PTO, etc.
Pay: $70,000.00 - $75,000.00 per year
