Role Overview
The General Manager, Kitchen Services is the primary leader responsible for overseeing food service operations, menu planning, inventory, and food safety; coaches staff and volunteers; and supports client vocational training in the kitchen while maintaining a hospitable, well-run dining experience. You help make the kitchen the heart of our Raleigh Rescue Mission home.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead daily kitchen operations (production, service, sanitation) and ensure consistent, quality meals.
- Plan menus and standardize recipes; manage inventory, purchasing, and donations with cost awareness.
- Maintain compliance with food safety standards (ServSafe best practices) and oversee labeling, storage, and cleanliness.
- Train, coach, and schedule a small team; manage timecards and team communication.
- Train and support clients in vocational kitchen skills (recipes, techniques, knife safety, sanitation, hospitality).
- Provide strong customer service and de-escalation support; collaborate with staff and welcome volunteers.
Required Skills & Abilities
- Ministry-minded; committed to investing in people with dignity and care.
- Strong knowledge of commercial kitchen operations, menu planning, and food safety regulations.
- Leadership experience (training, coaching) and excellent communication skills.
- Organized, detail-oriented, calm under pressure; able to de-escalate and problem-solve.
- Able to lift up to 50 lbs; able to stand for long periods in a hot/noisy kitchen environment.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to pass motor vehicle background checks.
- Flexible schedule availability (occasional weekends/holidays; every other weekend rotation).
Education and Experience
- 4+ years of food service management experience in a commercial kitchen.
- Budget and inventory management experience.
- ServSafe Manager Certification (current or able to obtain quickly).
- Strong interpersonal communication and conflict resolution skills
Work Conditions:
- Full-time, salaried exempt; expected 45+ hours/week.
- This environment requires an individual to be prepared to assist with potentially adverse conditions that may arise in a residential setting. (Ex. Flooding due to plumbing failure, outbreaks of illness.)
- Monday–Friday plus every other weekend rotation (Friday & Monday off that rotation weekend).
- Hot/noisy kitchen environment; occasional urgent needs typical of a residential setting.
- Occasional early/after-hours meetings; periodic weekend/holiday support as part of leadership team.
