Job Summary: Oakland Literacy Council (OLC) is a longstanding nonprofit organization that believes all adults in Oakland County deserve to share in the county's prosperity and confidently participate in their community by having basic literacy skills. The Council pairs trained volunteer tutors with adult learners throughout Oakland County to improve their reading, math, English language, and digital literacy skills. This part-time Program Coordinator will recruit and manage a caseload of tutors and their native Spanish-speaking adult English language learners to ensure program goals are met for delivery of instructional hours, educational gains, and retention of tutors and learners. The anticipated starting date for this position is August 17, 2026.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct outreach activities to recruit Spanish-speaking adult learners who have the greatest literacy needs in Oakland County by building relationships in underserved communities and establishing a presence at community events.
- Lead orientation sessions with prospective learners
- Complete student interviews and orient learners to online learning platforms.
- Match newly enrolled learners with trained tutors.
- Manage a caseload of matched student/tutor pairs, providing instructional support and motivation, and monitoring monthly instructional hours, coaching tutors, and encouraging student persistence.
- Coordinate annual review testing with office administrator.
- Identify tutor/student success stories and document program outcomes for individual learners.
- Make referrals as needed to social service resources to remove barriers to persistence.
- Maintain relationships with community partners who refer learners to our program.
- Maintain accurate data on learners and tutors.
- Attend annual student graduation event and occasional social gatherings planned for tutors and learners
This role will be ideal for you if you are...
- Bilingual Spanish and English
- High school diploma required or higher education
- Comfortable communicating with diverse groups of people;
- Adept at juggling multiple priorities, working efficiently, and bringing tasks to completion;
- Skilled at using technology (Microsoft Office is a must; familiarity with a CRM system and online learning curriculum is a plus); and analyzing data to identify trends and make decisions;
- Experienced in coaching, teaching, serving immigrants, or working in the nonprofit sector.
- TESOL certification is a bonus.
Hours: 20 hours per week, year-round. Mutually acceptable schedule to be determined upon hire.
Location: 51111 Woodward Avenue, Suite 720, Pontiac, with 25% remote work permitted
Compensation: $22 per hour. Generous paid time off. No health benefits.
