Position Overview
The Jailer is responsible for maintaining the safety, security, and orderly operation of the county detention facility. This position involves supervising inmates, monitoring facility activities, conducting security checks, maintaining accurate records, and following established corrections and safety procedures.
The ideal candidate is mature, dependable, observant, and able to remain calm and professional in challenging situations. Jailers must be capable of following procedures, communicating effectively, maintaining confidentiality, and working as part of a team.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain the safety, security, and orderly operation of the detention facility.
- Supervise inmates and monitor inmate activities throughout assigned shifts.
- Conduct regular security checks and inspections of housing areas and facility spaces.
- Monitor inmate behavior and promptly report unusual, disruptive, or potentially dangerous activity.
- Enforce facility rules, regulations, policies, and established security procedures.
- Conduct inmate counts and verify accurate housing assignments.
- Monitor entrances, exits, security areas, and controlled-access locations.
- Assist with inmate intake, booking, processing, classification, housing, and release procedures.
- Search inmates, living areas, and other authorized areas in accordance with department procedures.
- Maintain accurate logs, reports, incident documentation, and other required records.
- Document inmate movements, activities, incidents, and significant events.
- Escort inmates to designated areas, including medical appointments, visitation, court proceedings, and other authorized locations.
- Monitor visitation and communication activities according to facility policies.
- Assist with the distribution of meals, medications, clothing, hygiene supplies, and other authorized items as directed.
- Respond appropriately to emergencies, disturbances, medical incidents, and security situations.
- Request assistance and notify supervisors when incidents require additional personnel or specialized response.
- Assist medical and emergency personnel when required.
- Maintain professional and respectful communication with inmates, visitors, attorneys, law enforcement personnel, and other authorized individuals.
- Prevent the introduction of unauthorized or prohibited items into the facility.
- Inspect and maintain assigned equipment and report security or facility issues.
- Maintain cleanliness and order in assigned areas as required.
- Prepare written reports and communicate important information during shift changes.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding inmate information, facility operations, and law enforcement matters.
- Attend required training and maintain knowledge of department policies and correctional procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisory personnel.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Must meet applicable employment and background requirements of the Stephens County Sheriff’s Office.
- Valid driver's license may be required.
- Previous corrections, law enforcement, military, security, or public safety experience is preferred but not required.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions accurately.
- Strong observation and situational-awareness skills.
- Ability to remain calm and professional during stressful or unpredictable situations.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
- Dependable attendance and strong work ethic.

- Willingness to work varying schedules, including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.
- Ability to successfully complete required background screening, training, and other employment requirements.

Physical and Job Requirements
The Jailer position requires the ability to perform essential duties in a secure detention environment. Depending on assignment, employees may be required to:
- Stand and walk for extended periods.
- Sit, bend, reach, climb stairs, and move throughout the facility.
- Respond quickly to emergency situations.
- Perform security checks and inspections.
- Communicate effectively in stressful or noisy environments.
- Maintain sufficient physical ability to perform essential job functions.
- Work rotating shifts, nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime when necessary.

Work Environment
This position operates primarily within a county detention facility and requires regular interaction with inmates, law enforcement personnel, supervisors, medical personnel, visitors, and other authorized individuals.
The work environment can be fast-paced and unpredictable. Jailers must be prepared to respond appropriately to changing circumstances, maintain constant awareness of their surroundings, and follow established safety and security procedures.
The position may involve exposure to stressful situations and requires professionalism, sound judgment, emotional maturity, and strict adherence to department policies.
