What is a mentor?
A mentor is a trusted, consistent adult with the desire to share their skills, life experience and support with a youth from the community who could benefit from their knowledge and support. The young people attending ThePlace2B or receiving assistance from Alan’s House (male or female between the ages of 11 -18) are in need of social and recreational development emotional support the companionship of an adult to establish a connection in addition to parents, teachers, and counselors, social workers and other social services and education professionals.

Mentoring can take on different forms:
- One-to-one mentoring matches one adult to one younger person (or occasionally, two adults to one child).
- Group mentoring involves one adult working with a small group of young people.
- Team mentoring involves a group of several adults working with a group of young people.

Mentor Job Description
Mentor Duties/Responsibilities:
The mentor will be assigned to work part-time late afternoon/evening hours with occasional weekend responsibilities.
Regular hours include Monday - Friday from 2:30pm to 8:00pm.
The mentor will be working with youth in a group setting and one on one to encourage mastery of life skills, improved emotional regulation, participate in recreational and STEAM learning activities.
The mentor will work closely with the agency staff through phone contact, email, personal
conferences and group meetings to understand the youth and to facilitate activities.
The mentor will serve as an example/role model.
Mentor Requirements/Qualifications:
A person who is interested in becoming a mentor must have reliable transportation, valid driver’s license, clean driving record and the ability to pass Department of Children and Family Services as well as Criminal background checks.
Experience in teaching, human services or related helpful. Experience with young people is also helpful.
The mentor should have the ability to accept and relate to youth who may not share the mentor’s lifestyle and the mentor will respect the youth’s right to self-determination and independence.
The mentor should exhibit a great deal of common sense, intelligence and strong value system.
Serv safe food handler encouraged
Experience in operating a 15 passenger van
To be considered for the position, the mentor must be friendly, mature, sensitive to the experiences of others and demonstrate responsibility and consistency in previous employment and educational experiences.
Daily shifts and responsibilities can change depending on the youth and supervisory needs of the day. Some days, a mentor may be working directly with one youth on activities in focused areas. On other days, the same mentor could be making appointments and meeting with parents to obtain paperwork and build on the youth’s support system. The Mentors will also be called upon to participate in preparation, clean-up and planning around meals, activities and programming. Mentors expectations for professionalism and daily positive and meaningful youth interaction take priority.
Pay: $20.00 - $20.50 per hour
