Do you want to help small businesses and nonprofits keep their financial house in order so their team can focus on the mission? Are you comfortable wading into uncertainty and bringing a sense of calm confidence? Do you want to grow your understanding of how AI can be used to amplify your financial prowess? Do you want to work remotely with a three-day weekend almost every week? Then this is the job for you!
We are seeking a highly organized, full-time Staff Accountant to manage bookkeeping and general accounting services for a dedicated portfolio within our firm’s client roster. In this role, you will serve as the primary accounting expert for multiple small businesses and nonprofits, ensuring their financial records are accurate, compliant, and delivered on time each month. This position requires an individual who loves the challenge that comes from a multi-client environment and can switch contexts seamlessly. You must reside in the state of Ohio for this role with the ability to occasionally travel to the greater Columbus area.
Daily Responsibilities
- Serve a dedicated portfolio of clients using primarily QuickBooks Online, along with other accounting tools
- Reconciliation of bank and general ledger accounts, preparing and posting journal entries as needed
- Develop and execute AP and AR workflows tailored to client needs
- Lead month close processes and generation of financial reporting
- Create and update client documentation, work processes, and automations
- Maintain strong client relationships for retention and growth
- Handle with empathy the daily curveballs that come with supporting small businesses
A great candidate will have the following skills, experiences, and attitude
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or equivalent professional experience
- 2+ years of professional accounting experience. Experience in a multi-client environment (e.g. CPA firm, bookkeeping agency, advisory services) is highly preferred
- Solid understanding of double-entry accounting fundamentals in businesses, including debits/credits, payroll accounting, and accruals
- Experience analyzing and generating income statements, cash flow statements, and balance sheets
- Strong familiarity with QuickBooks Online, including ProAdvisor certification or ability to complete certification within 6 months of hire
- Ability to explain concepts in accounting and finance to those without a financial background
- No fear of diving into unkempt business financials and creating organization and structure
- Readiness to ask “why” until you understand instead of just following a checklist
- Adept at incorporating additional technology into your workflow and eager to learn more in this space
- Diligent responsiveness to client communications, responding quickly and efficiently even if the answer is just “I’ll research and get back to you”
Why Buckeye will be a great fit for you
Buckeye Bookkeeping Services has provided affordable, local, financial expertise for small businesses and nonprofits in the central Ohio area for more than 20 years. We believe strongly that these organizations are best served when their leaders can focus their time on their mission, armed with accurate and timely financial reporting.
- Flexible 4 day, 32 hour work week: Yes, that’s not a typo. We keep our portfolio loads reasonable enough that you should be able to get everything done Monday-Thursday. We generally don’t work or have meetings on Fridays. If you need to flex your own schedule during the week or catch up on Friday on your portfolio, feel free. Most of the rest of us will be starting the weekend. Our work is important, but so is the rest of life.
- Remote work: Almost all our work is done remotely, from wherever you work the best. There are a few times (with lots of notice) when you will have to attend a meeting, training, or client visit in person, but these are few and far between. Take your kid to the park for lunch. Work in your PJs. All good here.
- Monthly team lunches: Always optional, but we like to get together and enjoy all the great food options that central Ohio has to offer!
- Health Reimbursement: While we’re too small to directly provide health insurance, we do have reimbursements for health insurance premiums or out of pocket medical costs whether you get coverage from the individual marketplace, Medicare, partner coverage, or anywhere else.
- Career growth: A big focus for us is the integration of powerful technology into our work, including AI. There is always a talented human at the helm, but we strive to automate as much of the tedious parts as we can so we can focus on delivering value for clients. Plus, we serve so many industries that you will always have the opportunity to learn new things. Nonprofit accounting, construction, law, medical, e-commerce- we’ve seen it all!
