The Front Desk Receptionist is responsible for phone support and clerical duties related to all of The Bird Rescue Center’s (BRC) rescue and intake procedures. This is a seasonal position that provides critical support for the Rehabilitation Hospital, especially during Baby Bird Season. This position works closely with and reports to the Administration Operations & Program Manager and works closely with the Reception and Intake Coordinator and hospital staff and volunteers.
This is a 32 hours per week, seasonal, non-exempt role. The season is from filled to September. Workdays will include weekdays during training and then continue as Friday through Monday through the season.
General Duties and Responsibilities
- Greet and assist all visitors with warmth and professionalism, ensuring a welcoming experience for rescuers, donors, and volunteers.
- Handle injured or orphaned birds with care, following BRC intake protocols to ensure safety for both birds and people.
- Communicate immediately with hospital staff to ensure prompt treatment and minimize stress on the bird.
- Provide clear instructions and information to members of the public about next steps, BRC’s mission, and opportunities to support.
- Procure staff or volunteer rescuers or transporters of birds to/from the Center.
- Answer and route incoming phone calls, including urgent wildlife rescue inquiries.
- Oversee a combination of communication avenues including landline, cell phone, email, and in person.
- Maintain a clean and professional workspace.
- Other duties and/or responsibilities as assigned.
Data Management:
- Accurately enter and maintain contact records for members, donors, rescuers, and ambassador guardians in BRC’s donor management system.
- Regularly upload email addresses and update membership information to maintain strong community engagement with those who visited BRC.
- Support WRMD (Wildlife Rehabilitation Medical Database) entries.
Qualifications
- Works well with other team members and promotes a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere in the workplace.
- Minimum 1 year of experience in a receptionist, customer service, administrative, or animal care support role.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to handle emotional or stressful situations with empathy and professionalism.
- Knowledge of (or willingness to learn) native wild bird species common to Northern California.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment and remain calm under pressure.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; experience with CRM systems (e.g., Bloomerang) and WRMD is a plus.
- Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Passion for wildlife, conservation, and BRC’s mission.
- Must be 18 years or older.
- Current tetanus shot(s) required.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
- This is a front desk, public-facing, and on-site role in a highly interactive office environment.
- Requires frequent standing, occasional lifting (up to 25 pounds), and handling of injured birds following BRC protocols.
- Must be able to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays, especially during events or high-volume periods.
Pay: $18.21 - $20.00 per hour
