Job Summary
We are seeking a dedicated Correctional Nurse to provide comprehensive nursing care within a correctional facility environment. This role involves delivering high-quality medical services to incarcerated individuals, ensuring their health and safety are prioritized while adhering to strict security protocols. The ideal candidate will possess a strong foundation in acute and chronic care, with experience working in diverse healthcare settings, including hospital, emergency, or long-term care environments. The Correctional Nurse will play a vital role in managing patient assessments, administering medications, and coordinating care plans to support the well-being of the inmate population.
Responsibilities
- Conduct thorough patient assessments, including vital signs, physical examinations, and health histories, to determine immediate and ongoing medical needs.
- Administer medications and treatments accurately, including injections, IV infusions, and wound suturing, following established protocols.
- Manage acute pain and emergency situations utilizing aseptic techniques and airway management skills.
- Document all patient interactions comprehensively within electronic health record (EHR) systems such as Epic or Cerner, ensuring compliance with HIPAA regulations.
- Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams for case management, discharge planning, and specialized care such as dialysis or cardiology consultations.
- Perform diagnostic evaluations including specimen collection/processing and basic laboratory testing.
- Provide health education and coaching tailored to individual needs, including chronic disease management and behavioral health support.
- Maintain infection control standards and ensure sterile processing procedures are followed rigorously.
- Support triage processes for urgent care needs within the facility while adhering to NCQA standards for quality care.
- Assist with special procedures such as ostomy care, gastric lavage, or spinal taps when required.
- Ensure compliance with all correctional facility policies and healthcare regulations.
Experience
- Prior work experience with diverse patient populations including geriatrics, pediatrics, behavioral health patients, and individuals with developmental disabilities.
- Demonstrated proficiency in medical documentation using EMR/EHR systems like Epic or Cerner.
- Familiarity with ICD coding (ICD-9/ICD-10), CPT coding for procedures, and laboratory result interpretation.
- Experience managing complex cases involving trauma medicine or level I/II trauma center environments is highly desirable.
- Knowledge of Workers' Compensation law and post-acute care processes is advantageous.
- Strong understanding of infection control practices and aseptic techniques essential for safe patient care delivery.
- Ability to perform advanced skills such as catheterization, phlebotomy, tube feeding management, and ventilator support if applicable.
- Proven ability to work effectively under pressure in fast-paced settings while maintaining attention to detail.
