The Unified Government of Wyandotte County AmeriCorps VISTA Program strengthens local capacity to expand access to safe, high-quality parks and recreation services. This position supports the Parks & Recreation Department by improving operational systems that ensure parks in low-income neighborhoods are consistently maintained and accessible. The member will support the implementation of an asset management system to improve tracking, maintenance, and long-term planning of park and recreation assets. The VISTA member will help collect, organize, and input data on facilities, parks, and equipment to strengthen the department’s asset management system. They will support development of asset inventories, condition assessments, and maintenance tracking processes that improve operational efficiency and decision-making. These systems will help ensure that underserved communities have reliable access to safe, well-maintained public spaces that support physical activity, mental well-being, and community connection. The member will also assist with accreditation exploration and readiness efforts. The member will research accreditation standards (e.g., CAPRA) and assist in conducting a gap analysis of current departmental policies and practices, as well as support development of policies and procedures needed to advance accreditation readiness. By strengthening systems for asset management, accreditation, and organizational standards, this project will improve the quality and sustainability of parks and recreation services. These efforts will help reduce barriers to recreation and expand access to free or low-cost opportunities that support long-term health and stability for residents.
