job description: FRESH DEPARTMENTS SHIFT LEAD
purpose: To support the Fresh Departments Manager in supervising department staff to meet objectives for sales, margin, inventory turns, labor, and customer service. To stock, receive, and promote present products in full, clean, & organized displays and order products as directed in the Department Manager’s absence.

status: Reports to Fresh Dept Manager | Supervises Fresh Clerks in Dept Mgr. Absence| Full Time; 36+ hours a week
responsibilities:
MERCHANDISING
- Build attractive produce and other department displays, using color and texture to enhance; give the impression of abundance and quality, while maintaining proper storage conditions.
- Ensure displays are replenished, rotated, culled several times daily.
- Trim, wash, bundle produce and stock other departments as needed.
- Enter items in Point of Sale as directed following guidelines set by Fresh Department Manager to achieve margin and sales goals, while maintaining a competitive image. Mark down items as needed to reduce losses.
- Offer tastes, samples, suggestions for purchase and ways to prepare products.
- Provide product information to customers and staff.
DEPARTMENT MAINTENANCE
- Communicate product quality issues to Department Managers including new deliveries, product on shelf, and backstock. Ensure unsellable items are properly disposed of. Keep accurate shrinkage records.
- Ensure that Fresh department shelves, displays, aisles, prep & storage areas are in clean, orderly condition, meeting health department & ADA standards.
- Remove trash promptly, sweep and mop retail area floors frequently.
- Mark down items as needed to reduce losses.
- Use equipment safely. Ensure maintenance of department equipment in working order. Monitor cooler temperatures. Notify the General Manager of equipment problems or needs.
STAFF TRAINING AND GUIDANCE--for Fresh Dept clerks:
- Uphold stocking priorities, providing task lists to clerks on duty, and supporting managers in ensuring that shift duties are completed as outlined ensuring all tables/coolers/displays are fully stocked and rotated for freshness.
- Deliver on-the-job training as directed.
- Provide feedback to Fresh Department Manager on performance of staff working in the department paying special attention to performance concerns that need to be addressed in a timely manner.
PURCHASING & RECEIVING
- When assigned, purchase dept products following Fresh Dept Managers guidance and product selection guidelines & marketing plan, (e.g., priority for local, organic).
- Ensure accurate, up-to-date prices for department products in the POS system and shelf tags/signs.
- Receive orders, or ensure proper receiving by other staff in accordance with established procedures.
- Coordinate with Receivers in handling returns and obtaining credit from suppliers as needed.
- Participate in inventory counts for the fresh department.
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist customers in all departments, in prompt friendly courteous manner, referring them to other staff when necessary.
- Work regular Shift Leader shifts (see Shift Leader expectations).
- Attend Shift Lead meetings, storewide meetings. and other meetings as directed.
- Answer and route phone calls, take and route messages as needed.
- Perform other tasks assigned by Department Manager or General Manager

QUALIFICATION
- At least one year of experience in retail produce.
- Knowledge of organic and commercial growing practices, and organic certification regulations.
- Knowledge of current trends in the natural foods industry.
- Several innovative ideas for merchandising at the co-op.
- Organized, consistently follows through on commitments.
- Demonstrated ability to handle multiple demands.
- Communication skills--clear directions, good listener.
- Experience serving the public.
- Ability to project friendly, outgoing personality.
- Manual dexterity with hazardous equipment.
- Ability to lift 60+ pounds.
- Ability to stand for long periods.
- Ability to work in cold, wet conditions.
- Willingness to work one or more weekend days.
- Willingness to work one or more nights.
- Regular, predictable attendance.
- Willingness and ability to learn and grow to meet the changing requirements of the job.
Pay: $15.00 - $20.00 per hour
