WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT and COLLECTION SYSTEM OPERATOR
Definition: This is skilled work in the operation and maintenance of a sewage treatment plant and wastewater collection system.
Examples of Treatment Facility Duties:
Employees in this class operate and maintain motors, pumps, aerators, filters, digesters, flow meters and related equipment used in sewage treatment plants and/or wastewater collection systems. Work includes collection and preservation of samples for the purpose of conducting chemical testing of plant influent, effluent, and any other plant processes. In-house laboratory work shall include analysis and recording of temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, settleable solids, oxygen uptake, sludge volume index, Mean Cell Residence Times, oxygen uptake rate, and any/all testing required for process control in order to properly operate the wastewater treatment facility in accordance with state and federal laws.
Examples of Collection System Duties:
Includes the reading of meters, record keeping, map reading, schematic interpretation, inspections, equipment maintenance/replacement, line cleaning/flushing, and any/all work required to maintain the pumping stations and collection system piping.
Duties required of both the treatment plant and collection system include, but are not limited to housekeeping, painting, mowing/trimming, and any all work required to maintain a clean safe work environment. Operates and cleans Township owned motorized vehicles in a responsible manner.
i Work may include lead work and training responsibilities for laborers and semi-skilled laborers temporarily assigned to the sewage treatment plant. Work is performed following established operational and safety procedures and guidelines. All work performed is subject for review by a technical or administrative supervisor for quality and continuity of services.
Perform any other duties as directed by the Board of Supervisors, the Manager or Sewer Department Director.
Required Knowledges, Skills and Abilities:
· Ability to read and write at the GED 3 level.
· Possess and maintain a valid Pennsylvania CDL driver’s license.
· Possess a PA class BE subclass 1 wastewater treatment plan operator’s license.
· Maintain residency within Blair County.
· Possess normal color perception.
· Ability to understand and react to written and oral commands.
· Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions required while working in and around a wastewater treatment plant and collection system.
· Willingness to follow and adhere to all Township safety procedures.
· Basic knowledge of the tools used in operating and maintaining sewage treatment equipment.
· Ability to use and care for all tools, equipment, and property.
· Ability to comprehend charts, graphs, meters and other measuring devices used for sewage treatment plants and to maintain records on such readings.
· Ability to learn to read wiring/plumbing diagrams and schematic blueprints.
· Ability to perform heavy physical labor for short periods of time.
· Ability to work outdoors under varying climatic conditions.
· Ability to remain in a standing position for up to three (3) hours at a time).
· Ability to remain in a seated position for up to three (3) hours at a time.
· Ability to drive for up to four (4) hours at a time.
· Ability to lift up to fifty (50) pounds on a frequent basis, and with assistance up to one hundred twenty (120) pounds.
· Ability to bend, kneel, crawl, or squat frequently.
· Ability to climb to heights of twenty (20) feet.
· Candidate understands that call-outs and rotating weekend duty is necessary.
Acceptance is dependent upon candidate’s ability to pass a criminal background check, drug test, physical exam including a hearing test, and fulfillment of a fit to work analysis.
Candidate must possess and maintain a Pennsylvania operators Class BE subclass 1 operator’s license.
