Part-Time Mechanic's Helper
Position Summary
The Part-Time Mechanic's Helper provides support to the maintenance department by assisting diesel mechanics with the inspection, preventive maintenance, and repair of CDL-A tractors, trailers, and food-grade tanker equipment.
The Mechanic's Helper performs routine maintenance tasks, maintains a clean and organized shop, and assists in ensuring company equipment is maintained in a safe, reliable, and DOT-compliant operating condition.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Assist diesel mechanics with preventive maintenance and repairs on CDL-A tractors, trailers, and food-grade tanker equipment.
- Perform routine maintenance tasks including:
- Oil and filter changes
- Greasing chassis and suspension components
- Checking and maintaining fluid levels
- Tire pressure checks and inflation
- Battery testing and replacement
- Light bulb replacement
- Air filter replacement
- Light tire work removal / reinstall
- Keeping shop cleaned and organized at all times
- Assist with brake inspections, tire replacements, and minor repairs under the supervision of a qualified mechanic.
- Wash, clean, and prepare tractors, trailers, and tankers for maintenance or return to service.
- Retrieve parts, tools, and supplies for mechanics.
- Assist with moving equipment and components using proper lifting techniques and shop equipment.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop environment.
- Organize inventory and stock commonly used shop supplies.
- Dispose of waste fluids and materials in accordance with company policies and environmental regulations.
- Report damaged tools, equipment malfunctions, or unsafe conditions immediately.
- Follow all OSHA, DOT, FMCSA, and company safety policies and procedures.
- Perform miscellaneous shop, yard, and facility maintenance duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Previous mechanical, automotive, agricultural, construction equipment, or diesel experience is preferred but not required.
- Basic knowledge of hand tools and shop equipment.
- Strong mechanical aptitude with a willingness to learn.
- Ability to pass a pre-employment background check and drug screening.

- Mechanical aptitude and eagerness to learn diesel truck maintenance.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
- Strong work ethic and dependable attendance.
- Ability to complete assigned work accurately and in a timely manner.
- Ability to work independently after appropriate training.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
Physical Requirements
The employee must regularly:
- Stand, walk, bend, kneel, squat, climb, and reach throughout the workday.
- Lift, push, pull, and carry up to 75 pounds; heavier items require team lifting or mechanical assistance.
- Safely operate hand tools, power tools, jacks, lifts, and shop equipment.
- Work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Work around heavy equipment, diesel engines, lubricants, cleaning chemicals, and moving mechanical parts.
Work Schedule
This is a part-time position with a flexible schedule based on business needs.
- Typically 20–30 hours per week
- Flexible scheduling may be available
- Additional hours may be offered during periods of increased maintenance activity
- Occasional evening or weekend hours may be required

Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working on heavy-duty trucks, trailers, or diesel equipment.
- Vocational or technical training in diesel technology or automotive repair.
- Welding or fabrication experience.
- Familiarity with preventive maintenance inspection (PMI) programs.
Pay: $20.00 - $27.00 per hour
