Overview
The Food Expo / Runner / Kitchen Prep is a key support position that ensures seamless communication between the kitchen and dining room while maintaining Backwaters’ standards for food quality, presentation, and timing. This role combines expo and running duties with light kitchen prep work, supporting both front and back of house teams to keep service flowing smoothly.
Primary Responsibilities
Expo & Runner Duties
- Serve as the communication bridge between the kitchen and servers to ensure accurate and timely food service.
- Check each plate for presentation, garnish, temperature, and accuracy before leaving the kitchen.
- Coordinate ticket timing to ensure all food for a table is ready and runs together.
- Deliver food to guests promptly and professionally, announcing dishes as they’re placed.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of the expo line, pass window, and garnish station.
- Restock expo station with trays, condiments, plateware, and to-go items.
- Communicate effectively about special requests, allergies, or modifications.
- Assist servers during busy shifts by running food, clearing plates, or restocking service areas.
Kitchen Prep Duties
- Assist kitchen staff with basic prep work, including washing, chopping, portioning, labeling, and storing ingredients.
- Follow recipes and portioning standards as directed by the Kitchen Manager or Chef.
- Ensure prep area, coolers, and storage are clean, organized, and properly stocked.
- Rotate inventory and maintain proper date labeling (FIFO – First In, First Out).
- Set up and break down prep stations daily, ensuring readiness for service.
- Assist with closing duties such as cleaning equipment, wiping down stations, and proper food storage.
Qualifications
- Prior experience in a restaurant environment preferred (expo, runner, or prep cook).
- Strong multitasking, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
- High attention to detail and sense of urgency.
- Food safety awareness and adherence to sanitation standards.
- Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs and stand for long periods.

Job Types: Full-time, Part-time
Pay: $10.98 - $20.00 per hour
