The Bob Burdette Center is a small nonprofit on Charleston's West Side that gives children in grades K-5 a safe, encouraging place to learn and grow after school — free to their families. We are a close team — we wear a lot of hats, laugh a lot, and genuinely like showing up for each other and for our kids. We are looking for one more good person to join us: someone steady, kind, and glad to pitch in on whatever the day needs.
What this job really is:
This is a "what we need, when we need it" role, with real room to make it your own. Some days that means researching and preparing a grant; some days it is building a tracking spreadsheet, covering the phones, running an errand, or lending a hand with the food program or a field trip. This role carries real independence, so we are looking for someone who can step back and see the bigger picture, notice what could run more smoothly, and bring ideas and solutions instead of waiting to be told what to do. What matters just as much is the spirit behind it: we want someone whose instinct is to make the whole team stronger, not to run the show. Fresh eyes and a smarter way of doing things are genuinely welcome here — empire-building is not.

- Self-directed and resourceful — you take ownership of your work and keep things moving without needing someone over your shoulder
- A big-picture thinker who notices what could work better and is glad to suggest a smarter system or structure, always in service of the team and the mission

- Organized and careful with details, and comfortable enough with Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets to work in them routinely
- Warm and trustworthy around children and families, which is the heart of everything we do

The practical must-haves:
- Able to pass a background check, since we serve children in grades K-5
- A valid driver's license, a clean driving record, and at least 25 years of age — our insurance requires this for anyone who occasionally drives the Center's van or bus for field trips (no commercial license needed, and we train you)
- High school diploma or equivalent; any experience with grants, bookkeeping, childcare, or nonprofit work is a welcome bonus rather than a requirement
The details:
- Part-time, roughly 25 hours per week, with a friendly schedule we build together (and if it suits both of us, the potential to move to full time is possible but not required)
- $15–17 per hour, in person at our West Side location
- Paid training, a supportive and flexible schedule, and the chance to see the difference your work makes each afternoon when the kids walk through our doors
