Program Assistants play a vital role in creating a safe, welcoming, and respectful environment that supports each participant's journey toward permanent housing and independence.
Position Summary
Program Assistants shall possess, at minimum, a high school diploma or equivalent. Educational requirements may be waived for candidates who can document lived experience with homelessness. New Endeavors by Women will ensure that assigned duties align with each Program Assistant's qualifications, skills, and competencies.
Program Assistants are responsible for maintaining a safe, supportive, and trauma-informed environment within Low Barrier Shelter (LBS) and Transitional Housing programs. They serve as the first point of contact for participants and guests while promoting dignity, respect, accountability, and engagement consistent with New Endeavors' mission.
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesSafety and Security
- Provide 24-hour onsite monitoring services to promote the safety and well-being of participants, staff, visitors, and the facility.
- Conduct continuous visual monitoring of CCTV systems located at front desk stations, workstations, and participant check-in areas.
- Ensure staff coverage is maintained at the front desk and participant entrance at all times.
- Conduct hourly rounds throughout occupied floors and monitor participant compliance with shelter policies and posted regulations.
- Perform hourly visual inspections of exterior areas visible from participant entrances and immediately report safety, maintenance, or security concerns.
- Carry and appropriately use two-way communication devices throughout each shift to ensure timely communication and emergency response.
Participant Engagement and Support
- Welcome participants and guests with professionalism, dignity, and respect, fostering an environment where individuals feel safe and valued.
- Assist with participant intake and bed assignments while ensuring compliance with shelter policies, including the two-bag limit and District regulations.
- Utilize trauma-informed and person-centered communication techniques to build positive relationships with participants.
- Encourage participant engagement in available supportive services that contribute to housing stability, wellness, and personal growth.
- Provide compassionate support while maintaining professional boundaries and reinforcing program expectations.
Crisis Intervention
- Observe participant behavior and identify potential safety concerns.
- Utilize de-escalation techniques to effectively manage conflicts or behavioral crises.
- Promptly notify supervisors, Case Managers, security personnel, or emergency responders of active or imminent risks.
- Document incidents accurately and objectively in accordance with agency policies and DHS contractual requirements.
Operations and Facility Support
- Assist with receiving meals from food vendors and complete food service inventory reports during assigned shifts.
- Support the planning, setup, and monitoring of recreational, educational, and wellness activities that foster community engagement and participant well-being.
- Assist in maintaining a clean, organized, welcoming, and safe environment throughout the facility.
- Report maintenance issues and facility concerns promptly to the appropriate staff.
Documentation and Communication
- Maintain accurate, timely, and objective documentation of observations, incidents, participant interactions, and shift activities.
- Communicate relevant information to Case Managers, supervisors, security staff, and other interdisciplinary team members to ensure continuity of care.
- Participate in shift change reports and team meetings as assigned.

- Wearing agency-approved attire or identification that clearly identifies them as staff members.
- Remaining awake, alert, attentive, and engaged throughout the entire shift.
- Refraining from the use of personal electronic devices, reading materials, games, radios, or other distractions while on duty.
- Adhering to all DHS contractual requirements, agency policies, safety protocols, and ethical standards.

Pay: $20.31 per hour
