Salary: $24/hr - $28/hr

Position Overview:
We are seeking experienced Heavy Plate Fitters/Fabricators to accurately lay out, fit, and assemble large welded steel components using blueprints, fabrication drawings, and shop specifications.
This is primarily a fitting and assembly role, not a production welding position. Candidates must have strong experience with heavy plate layout, fit-up, and FCAW tack welding during fabrication.
Pre-Employment Assessment:
All candidates must successfully complete a hands-on fitting and welding assessment at our Irving facility.
Required PPE:
- Welding hood
- Heavy welding gloves
- Long-sleeve cotton work shirt
- Welding pliers (Welpers)
- Cotton work clothes
- Steel-toe boots
FCAW Assessment:
- 1/16 in. dual-shield flux-cored wire
- 10 in. T-joint plate
- 3/8 in. material
Weld positions:
- 3F vertical uphill (3/8 in.)
- 2F fillet weld (5/8 in.)
Key Responsibilities:
- Position, align, fit, and assemble heavy steel plate components and large weldments.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings, fabrication drawings, bills of material, and work orders.
- Lay out, measure, and mark materials while accounting for plate thickness, weld shrinkage, and fabrication tolerances.
- Move and position large components using overhead cranes, hoists, and shop equipment.
- Use clamps, jacks, wedges, pins, and other fitting tools to achieve accurate fit-up.
- Verify dimensions using tape measures, squares, levels, and layout tools.
- Tack weld assemblies to secure parts prior to final welding.
- Perform FCAW welding during fit-up and fabrication as required.
- Straighten and adjust components using torches, presses, and fabrication techniques.
- Build simple fixtures and fit-up aids when needed.
- Work closely with supervisors and team members to maintain quality, safety, and production flow.
- Maintain a clean and organised fabrication area.
Required Qualifications:
- 3+ years of heavy plate fitting or heavy fabrication experience.
- Strong blueprint reading and layout skills.
- Experience fitting large weldments and heavy steel plate assemblies.
- FCAW (Flux Core Arc Welding) experience.
- Experience working with thick plate and heavy industrial components.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to lift 50+ lbs in a fabrication shop environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Heavy industrial fabrication experience (steel mills, mining, material handling, heavy equipment, structural fabrication).
- Multi-pass FCAW welding experience.
- Overhead crane and forklift experience.
- Experience with tight-tolerance fit-up on large weldments.
