We are currently seeking a qualified Ophthalmology Technician to support the LA General Ophthalmology Clinic at the Los Angeles General Medical Center through our county-wide partnership.
Position Overview
In this role, you will work directly with physicians and clinical staff within the LA General Ophthalmology Clinic to provide essential diagnostic testing, patient intake, clinic prep, and procedural assistance in a high-volume clinical environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Patient Workup & Assessment: Escort patients to exam rooms, obtain basic medical histories and medication lists, and accurately record visual acuity, intraocular pressure (IOP), color vision, and pupillary response.
- Procedural Assistance: Assist providers during examinations and specialized ocular procedures. Administer prescribed topical eye drops (antibiotics, dilating, anesthetic) under physician direction. Assist with sterile field prep and medication preparation for injections.
- Diagnostic Testing: Perform formal visual field testing, Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) scans, intraocular lens (IOL) calculations, Optos color and fluorescein angiography photos, topography, ocular ultrasound, and other specialized ophthalmic imaging.
- Room & Instrument Care: Prepare, clean, and maintain treatment rooms and specialized ophthalmic equipment. Monitor instruments for malfunctions and ensure proper calibration.
- Documentation: Input diagnostic orders and accurately record patient information into the Electronic Health Record (EHR) system.
- Patient Education: Deliver authorized basic healthcare habits and preventive eye care guidance to patients as directed.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Experience: Minimum of six (6) months of hands-on experience in a healthcare or clinical setting required (ophthalmology/optometry experience strongly preferred).
- Skills: Proficiency in visual acuity testing, IOP evaluation, OCT, and basic ophthalmic imaging.
- Technical Proficiency: Comfortable navigating Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems for documentation and order entries.
- Interpersonal: Strong communication skills and a compassionate approach to patient care in a diverse medical setting.
