We are seeking an experienced and hands-on IT Manager to lead the technology function for a business owner who operates multiple entities across different industries. This is a rare opportunity for an IT professional to diversify their experience well beyond what a single-entity role typically offers — working across varied environments, business needs, and technology stacks, all while reporting directly to ownership.
The ideal candidate is a versatile, roll-up-your-sleeves IT generalist with strong networking, server, and virtualization expertise who can also manage a team, enforce SLAs, support compliance initiatives, and help automate operations across the organization.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Design, deploy, and maintain network infrastructure across multiple entities, with particular emphasis on Ubiquiti (UniFi) networking equipment — routers, switches, access points, and controllers.
- Manage and maintain physical rack server environments, including hardware lifecycle, capacity planning, cabling standards, and datacenter/server room organization.
- Administer VMware ESXi virtualization environments, including host configuration, virtual machine provisioning, resource allocation, snapshots/backups, and patching.
- Lead and manage the internal IT team, setting priorities, assigning tickets, and ensuring accountability for day-to-day support operations.
- Establish, monitor, and enforce SLA (Service Level Agreement) standards for the IT help desk/ticketing system, ensuring timely resolution and clear escalation paths.
- Partner with Compliance to ensure IT policies, access controls, data handling, and security practices meet applicable regulatory and internal standards.
- Identify opportunities to automate recurring operational tasks (provisioning, monitoring, reporting, onboarding/offboarding, patch management) across entities to improve efficiency and reduce manual workload.
- Standardize IT processes, documentation, and asset management across multiple business entities while respecting each entity's unique operational needs.
- Manage relationships with outside vendors, ISPs, and managed service providers as needed.
- Oversee cybersecurity fundamentals: endpoint protection, backups/disaster recovery, firewall configuration, and user access management.
- Provide direct hands-on support and troubleshooting when needed, in addition to managing the broader team.
- Report regularly to the business owner on IT operations, project status, risks, and recommendations for improvement.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATION
- Bachelor's degree required (Information Technology, Computer Science, or a closely related field).
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive IT experience, including hands-on network administration and infrastructure management.
- Demonstrated experience with Ubiquiti networking products (UniFi routers, switches, access points, and network controller management).
- Solid experience managing physical rack-mounted servers in a business/enterprise environment.
- Working knowledge of VMware ESXi and virtualization best practices.
- Prior experience managing or leading an IT support team, including ticket queues and SLA performance.
- Experience supporting or working alongside Compliance functions (data security, access control, audit readiness, or similar).
- Demonstrated interest or experience in process automation and operational efficiency improvements.
- Strong communication skills and comfort working directly with business ownership/executive leadership.
- Ability to work on-site in Houston, TX.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience supporting multiple business entities, subsidiaries, or a multi-site organization.
- Familiarity with IT ticketing/helpdesk platforms (e.g., Freshservice, Zendesk, ConnectWise, or similar).
- Scripting or automation experience (PowerShell, Python, Ansible, or similar tools).
- Relevant certifications such as VMware VCP, Network+, Security+, CompTIA A+, or Ubiquiti certifications.
- Experience with backup/disaster recovery solutions and cybersecurity frameworks.
WHAT MAKES THIS ROLE DIFFERENT
This position offers career growth and skill diversification that's difficult to find in a single-company IT role. Because our organization spans multiple entities, you'll gain exposure to varied technology environments, business models, and operational challenges — all while working closely and directly with a business owner who values IT as a strategic function, not just a support desk.
