Broad Equipment & Services Team (B.E.S.T.) specializes in the structural condition inspection and maintenance of our transportation infrastructure. Our mission is to ensure the safety and serviceability of New York’s roads, bridges, and large culverts through high-quality, defensible structural inspection.
We are hiring Assistant Culvert Inspectors (ACI), Senior Culvert Inspectors (SCI), and Assistant Team Leaders for bridge inspection to support our on-going contracts. These roles perform hands‑on field inspections of small bridges and large culverts across Western NY, Central NY, and the Southern Tier as part of a two‑person inspection team.
This is a primarily field‑based, in‑person position with opportunities for partial remote work. All travel to job sites is paid on‑the‑clock time. Candidates must reside within the Western/Central NY or Southern Tier regions and be available to travel throughout the region as assigned.
The company's primary focus is providing inspections of in-service bridges, culverts, and infrastructure at the request of owners, including state, federal, and local municipalities. B.E.S.T. is seeking reliable, self-motivated candidates to join our on-going Large Culvert Inspection contract with NYSDOT. These positions involve the assessment of small bridges and large culverts throughout Western & Central New York, and the Southern Tier, working as part of a two-person inspection team. We are hiring for both roles.
Positions Available
Senior Culvert Inspector (SCI) - The SCI leads the two-person inspection team and is responsible for ensuring each structure is properly inspected and that reports are prepared in conformance with the FHWA and NYSDOT Bridge Inspection Manuals, along with NYSDOT safety bulletins and technical advisories.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading field inspections and directing the work of the ACI
- Ensuring accuracy, completeness, and quality of inspection reports
- Serving as primary contact with NYSDOT PM/QC Engineers and partner firms
- Reviewing inspection findings and coordinating follow‑up actions
- Communicating inspection findings with NYSDOT and partner firms
Assistant Culvert Inspector (ACI) - The ACI works under the direct supervision of the SCI, assisting with inspection, measurement, assessment, and documentation of structural components.
Job Functions Include (both positions):
- Paid safety and technical training
- Paid travel from the office to inspection sites
- Field inspection and measurement of structural components; identifying and documenting deficiencies in small bridges and large culverts
- Technical report writing, performing calculations, creating charts and tables, and preparing report sketches using Microsoft Office and NYSDOT's Enterprise Asset Management (EAM/SMS) software
- Reviewing and interpreting structural plans, drawings, and inventory items
- Planning and scheduling
SCI additional responsibilities:
- Directing and reviewing the work of the ACI in the field
- Taking overall responsibility for the accuracy, completeness, and quality of the inspection report
- Serving as the primary point of contact with NYSDOT and partner firms on inspection findings
General Qualifications (both positions)
- Team player with a positive attitude
- Ability to safely work in high-traffic areas on or near highways, carry and climb ladders, perform occasional crawling and work in small/confined spaces after proper training, at heights, and/or in adverse weather conditions
- Valid Driver's License
- Ability to travel throughout Western, Central, and Southern Tier of NY
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word
- Must be legally eligible to work in the United States. Employment is contingent upon completion of federal Form I-9 and, per contract requirements, may be subject to E-Verify or other employment eligibility verification as required by NYSDOT and applicable state, local, and federal hiring guidelines
- B.E.S.T. complies with applicable NYSDOT/federal-aid contract requirements
Educational & Experience Requirements
Assistant Culvert Inspector (ACI):
- BS in Civil Engineering (preferred) or related field; or
- Associate Degree in Civil Engineering Technology or equivalent, and 1½ years of bridge/culvert experience in design, construction, inspection, or other bridge-related work; or
- At least three (3) years of bridge experience in design, construction, inspection of bridges or large culverts, or other bridge-related work
Senior Culvert Inspector (SCI):
- BS in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program (or an equivalent degree acceptable to NYSDOT); or
- Associate Degree in Civil Engineering Technology (or an equivalent Associate Degree acceptable to NYSDOT) and 3 years of bridge experience in design, construction, inspection of bridges or culverts, or other bridge-related work
