CDL Drivers transport construction equipment between locations using tractor trailers and heavy trucks. They must adhere to traffic and safety regulations while still making their deliveries on time. Drivers must hold a Class A commercial driver’s license and maintain their medical certification as required. Driving large vehicles can be difficult, so CDL drivers must be comfortable operating heavy machinery and have the hand-eye coordination to do it proficiently. They are also legally required to have strong eyesight and hearing and be in good physical health.
Essential Functions
Loading, unloading, and securing of equipment for transport
Safely loads and unloads various types of equipment using proper tools and handling techniques
Ensures all cargo is balanced, tied down, and secured in compliance with company policies and federal safety regulations
Confirms that load documentation is accurate and equipment is protected from damage during transit
Operates commercial vehicles to transport equipment on local and regional routes
Plans efficient travel paths while considering traffic, weather, and delivery deadlines
Maintains reliability and adapts to schedule changes or customer needs
Completes thorough pre-trip, en-route, and post-trip inspections of trucks, trailers, and safety systems
Identifies mechanical issues early and reports them promptly to prevent breakdowns
Keeps accurate inspection logs and follows all safety protocols to ensure road readiness
Communicates professionally with customers to ensure a positive delivery experience
Provides clear updates on delivery timing, equipment condition, and special instructions
Addresses customer concerns promptly and courteously
Demonstrates safe and proper equipment usage to customers at point of delivery
Ensures customers understand key safety features, operating procedures, and basic maintenance
Maintains accurate logs, delivery records, inspection reports, and hours-of-service documentation
Follows all Department of Transportation regulations and company policies

Required Education and Experience
High School Diploma or GED
Valid Class A driver’s license required; Medical certification
2+ years proven experience with tractor-trailer driving preferred
Clean driving record with no moving violations
Must pass a background check and drug test
Ability to work flexible shifts
Comfortable maneuvering and parking a tractor-trailer
Alert, focused, and detail-oriented
Physically and mentally fit
Strong eyesight and hearing
Military service will be considered in lieu of education/certification experience as applicable.

Work Environment
Work is primarily conducted in construction sites, equipment yards, and transportation routes
Regular exposure to heavy machinery and diesel-powered equipment
Frequent outdoor work in varying weather conditions including heat, cold, rain, and wind
Physically demanding environment with uneven terrain, dust, mud, and loud noise levels
Duties may involve shop tasks and fieldwork, including travel to remote job sites
Strict adherence to safety protocols is required at all times
PPE such as steel-toe boots, safety glasses, gloves, and hearing protection must be worn
Must be comfortable operating around large equipment, confined spaces, and elevated positions
Lifting heavy components and materials is often required
Flexibility and adaptability are essential due to rapidly changing job site conditions
Travel Required
Local travel required daily to job sites.
Physical Demands
Requires high physical stamina and mobility for jobsite and yard environments
Frequent lifting, carrying, and maneuvering of tools, chains, tarps, and equipment up to 50+ pounds
Regular bending, squatting, kneeling, crouching, and reaching
Prolonged standing, walking, and working on uneven terrain
Climbing in/out of trucks, trailers, and equipment is required
Ability to work from heights and maintain balance on steps, ladders, or platforms
Fine motor skills and dexterity for controls, tie-downs, and documentation
Must safely operate commercial vehicles and remain alert in hazardous conditions
Occasional pushing, pulling, and positioning of heavy materials
