Available Positions & Core Responsibilities
Option 1: Administrative Assistant (Assessor’s Office)
- Rate of Pay: $23.62/hr - $24.36/hr
- Supervision: Reports directly to the Assessor and Deputy Assessor.
- Core Focus: Provides administrative support for property assessment operations, records management, and public assistance.
- Key Duties:
- Serves as the primary point of contact for the public (phones, emails, and walk-ins).
- Responds to inquiries regarding motor vehicle, business personal property, and real estate assessments.
- Assists in maintaining Grand Lists and processing motor vehicle adjustments.
- Updates the veteran’s exemption database and supports taxpayers with state/local tax relief applications.
Option 2: Tax Collection Clerk (Tax Collector’s Office)
- Schedule: Full-time (37.5 hours/week), overtime as needed.
- Supervision: Reports to the Tax Collector and Assistant Tax Collector.
- Core Focus: Processes municipal tax and utility payments in accordance with Connecticut General Statutes.
- Key Duties:
- Processes tax and water/sewer payments at the counter, via mail, and online; balances cash drawers and prepares deposits.
- Responds to public inquiries, clearly explaining complex tax laws and office policies.
- Coordinates DMV clearances, liens, lien releases, and escrow information.
- Corresponds professionally with banks and attorneys regarding pay-off requests.
Minimum Qualifications
To be successful in either role, candidates should possess:
- Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
- Experience: 2–3 years of clerical, administrative, or cash-handling/bookkeeping experience. (Preference given to prior experience in a municipal Assessor’s or Tax Collector’s office).
- Technical Skills: Strong computer literacy, including proficiency with Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets) and Microsoft applications. Experience with Quality Data Services (QDS) or other tax/assessment software is a major plus.
- Customer Service: Proven ability to interact effectively, professionally, and calmly with the general public, staff, and outside agencies—even during peak busy periods.
- Skills: Excellent attention to detail, strong mathematical/reconciliation skills, and the absolute ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with professionalism.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit or stand at a public service counter for extended periods.
