The Viking Group is seeking an experienced Carpenter / Working Foreman to join our field team. This position is ideal for a skilled carpenter who takes pride in quality craftsmanship and has the leadership experience to coordinate crews, manage daily field activities, and keep projects moving safely and efficiently.
Our work focuses on the restoration and adaptive reuse of historic buildings throughout West Virginia and the Appalachian region. The successful candidate will be comfortable working hands-on alongside the crew while providing the organization, communication, and leadership expected of a foreman.
Position Responsibilities
- Perform skilled rough and finish carpentry on historic rehabilitation and commercial construction projects.
- Lead and work alongside carpenters, laborers, and specialty subcontractors.
- Coordinate daily work activities with the project superintendent and project management team.
- Review construction drawings, specifications, and field conditions.
- Plan work activities, assign tasks, and confirm that crews have the necessary materials, tools, and information.
- Monitor workmanship to ensure work meets project requirements and The Viking Group’s quality standards.
- Assist with the careful removal, repair, replication, and installation of historic building materials.
- Coordinate deliveries, material staging, equipment use, and site logistics.
- Identify field conflicts and communicate potential schedule, quality, or constructability concerns.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe jobsite.
- Enforce company safety procedures and promote a strong culture of accountability.
- Track daily progress, manpower, completed work, and jobsite conditions.
- Help train and mentor less-experienced members of the field team.
- Represent The Viking Group professionally when interacting with owners, architects, subcontractors, inspectors, and community partners.
Required Qualifications
- At least five years of professional carpentry or commercial construction experience.
- Previous experience serving as a foreman, lead carpenter, or crew leader.
- Strong knowledge of rough carpentry, finish carpentry, framing, doors, windows, trim, and general construction practices.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and details.
- Ability to plan work, direct a crew, and maintain productivity.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality craftsmanship.
- Effective communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to safely operate standard carpentry tools and construction equipment.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
- Ability to perform physically demanding work, including lifting, climbing, standing, kneeling, and working in varying weather conditions.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with historic preservation, restoration, or adaptive reuse projects.
- Experience repairing or replicating historic woodwork, windows, doors, trim, and architectural features.
- Commercial renovation or occupied-building experience.
- OSHA safety training.
- Experience coordinating subcontractors and maintaining daily field reports.
- Working knowledge of building codes and jobsite safety requirements.
