Our church has a rich history in the heart of downtown Myrtle Beach. We have a great staff with two full time ministers, a full time children's minister position and a full time youth minister's position as well as other full time and part time staff. We have great music in our contemporary worship service as well as our traditional worship service. We're averaging about 400 in weekly worship attendance and about 150 in Sunday School and small groups. We're blessed that our congregation gives generously to fund missions and church ministries and programs. God is on the move, and we are excited!
Job Description: Director of Children’s Ministry (Full Time)
Position Purpose: The Director of Children’s Ministry shall seek to direct a growing, vibrant children’s ministry program that fosters Christian discipleship and community through building relationships with children and families that strengthen their commitment to the church and to Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord.
The Director of Children’s Ministries shall:
- Have a strong, growing personal relationship with Jesus Christ through personal study, prayer, worship, and service to others.
- Plan, envision, oversee, and evaluate, with the Children’s Leadership Team, all aspects of the children’s ministry including our nursery, Little Church and Sunday School, fun and meaningful summer activities and camp, Vacation Bible School, Seasonal events: such as: Easter Egg Hunt, Trunk or Treat, and Christmas celebration. We would like to start weekly or biweekly children’s program on Sunday or Wednesday afternoons/evenings. We would like for the programs and activities to be interesting and meaningful to children so that they will want to participate and so that parents will want to bring them.
- Be responsible for making sure all guidelines and procedures are followed in our Safe Sanctuary Policy as it pertains to Children’s Ministry.
- With the assistance of the Children’s Leadership Team: Choose curriculum, plan activities, recruit, and train leaders, etc.
- Work closely with our preschool (Child Development Ministry) to teach weekly chapel lessons and build relationships with the students and staff through regularly scheduled times during the week, such as greeting the children and their parents during drop off or pick up, assisting with the music program, or other activity approved by your supervisor and the director of CDM.
- Work with the director of CDM, our church staff, and our Children’s Leadership Team to plan some programs that families from church and from CDM can participate together. The goal is to build relationships, to invite, and to encourage some of our CDM families to become part of our church family.
- Schedule and resource volunteers for the nursery, children’s sermons, children’s church and teachers for children’s Sunday School. Seek to build and sustain positive volunteer morale, including being in regular communication with children’s ministry teachers and volunteers and appropriately thanking and encouraging them.
- Be available to counsel and pray with children regarding spiritual matters and notify the ministers if there is a perceived need to refer them to one of our pastors.
- Participate in at least one continuing education opportunity each year.
- Oversee children’s ministry classrooms and environments to ensure that they are appropriately decorated, clean and orderly, and properly stocked with supplies.
General Responsibilities:
- Be a part of the worshiping community of First Methodist Church on a regular basis, taking part in the life and fellowship of the church.
- Keep the parents and the congregation informed of Children’s ministry events through the appropriate publications provided by the church. (social media, special mailings, posters, bulletin announcements, website, etc.)
- Represent the Children’s Ministry at Church Council meetings as well as prepare a yearly report for Charge Conference
- Manage the disbursement of budgeted funds for Children’s Ministry within the guidelines of the approved budget and in adherence with the purchasing policies of the church.
- Keep of administrative records, including but not be limited to: files on fundraisers, program activities for use in future planning (including attendance, cost, and adult volunteers), parental consent forms , etc.
- Attend weekly staff meetings.
- Other duties as assigned by the Senior Minister.
Education & Experience
- College degree required, preferably in children’s ministry or childhood education and/or certification in Christian Education or Children’s Ministry
- 3-5 years of experience in working within a children’s ministry, planning curriculum and programs, and leading classes
- Demonstrate a clear calling, desire, and aptitude to grow our children’s ministry in number and in spiritual formation.
- Be willing to keep a current CPR and First Aid certification

- Computer, word-processing, email, internet, and other technical skills.
Hours / Working Expectations
(36-40 hours/week) The full-time position of Director of Children’s Ministry requires flexibility in hours available for work, including weekends and some evenings. It is recognized that the schedule may vary at different times of the year. It is therefore understood that the Director of Children’s Ministry shall:
- Maintain some regularly scheduled office hours in order to be accessible to children, parents, staff.
- Notify the staff prior to all unforeseen and untimely absences from regularly scheduled events, and provide a suitable substitute in the case of anticipated absence.
- Be familiar with and operate within the guidelines set forth in the employee handbook.
- Schedule some work time out of the office to attend ball games, dance recitals, and/or other extracurricular activities of children in our church family.
Accountability
The Director of Children’s Ministry will report to the Associate Minister and Staff-Parish Relations Committee. A performance evaluation and goal setting will be held on an annual basis.
