PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT
JOB DESCRIPTION
QUALIFICATION/SKILLS:
The incumbent shall have a BA or BS degree and be a graduate of a two (2) year Physician
Assistant accredited program. They will be expected to display technical skills commiserate with their individual level of training and expertise. They will be board certified through the
National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants and be licensed by the
Connecticut State Licensing Board; also, to include a state Physician Assistant license and both state and federal controlled substance licenses. Physical work locations are Hartford Hospital and occasionally, the Hospital of Central Connecticut.
SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY:
Physician Assistants will perform under the direct supervision of an anesthesiologist. The primary role of the Physician Assistant will be to provide technical support to attending anesthesiologists according to established protocols. As a member of the Anesthesiology
Team, he/she will be expected to conduct themselves in a manner that reflects well on the anesthesia practice, working independently and consistently with the specialty's code of conduct. The incumbent will act to foster good relations with both surgical and medical staff.
Physician Assistant shall be appointed to the Hartford Hospital Allied Health staff and may be credentialed at one of IAA’s other hospitals or off-site outpatient surgery centers.
DUTIES:
Under the direct supervision of an anesthesiologist, Physician Assistants are authorized to: a) Perform screening and assessment of patients in the pre-admission testing center
(PATC), the pre-operative holding area and on nursing units at Hartford Hospital. When appropriate, findings will be communicated to a physician anesthesiologist.
Additionally, may be required to perform chart reviews at the Hospital of Central
Connecticut as well b) Perform pre-operative placement of peripheral and central intravenous lines, Swan
Ganz catheters, and radial artery lines c) Perform post-operative evaluation of anesthesia patients and when appropriate, to communicate findings with a physician anesthesiologist d) Facilitate rapid patient turnover in the main operative room or ambulatory surgery center by helping with pre-operative placement of intravenous lines, patient transfer to

the operative rooms, attachment of monitors and communication between anesthesia, surgical and nursing staff e) Conduct education sessions/classes for patients undergoing major surgery; perform other pre-operative consults and communicate findings to physician anesthesiologists and surgeons f) Assist physician anesthesiologists with management of acute pain problems g) Participate in the anesthesia and multi-disciplinary QI and PI projects, as well as other clinical trials and research studies, as applicable h) Perform other duties as directed by the anesthesiologist.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: a) Hours of employment are 6:00am-230pm, Monday – Friday, however you may be asked to be cover at additional IAA sites when other staff members are on vacation b) Vacation requests will be entered/requested via our scheduling program c) In the case of illness, the Clinical Floor Manager & Chief Administrative Officer are to be notified by 6:30am or the night before d) Periodic evaluation/review will be performed by the Personnel Committee with input from attending staff who have frequently supervised the incumbent. Final review/approval will be by the Department Director and Chief Administrative Officer.
Evaluations will be completed annually. e) The incumbent will be responsible for maintaining current certification and licensure.
Requests for continuing education and professional development will be approved by the Personnel Committee. They are encouraged to participate in department sponsored educational conferences
