About Community High School
Community High School (CHS) is a college-preparatory charter high school in Brooklyn, NY, founded on the belief that every student deserves a rigorous, culturally affirming education. As a member of the Beginning with Children (BwC) education network, CHS prepares students for success in higher education and beyond. We are a young school with deep roots — having just graduated our inaugural Class of 2026 — and we are growing intentionally, building programs that challenge students intellectually while connecting them to the broader human story.
Position Overview
CHS is seeking a dynamic and knowledgeable Part-Time Latin Language Instructor to deliver an embedded Latin curriculum within our 9th and 10th grade English classes. This is an exciting opportunity to shape a first-of-its-kind program at CHS — one grounded in etymology, academic vocabulary development, SAT preparation, and Roman history and culture.
The course will be delivered two to three times per week in 20–25 minute embedded sessions co-taught alongside the English teacher. Students who complete the full sequence will earn 1.0 LOTE (Language Other Than English) credit (0.25 credit per semester over four semesters), fulfilling a New York State graduation requirement in an innovative and academically enriching format.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and deliver engaging 20–25 minute Latin instruction sessions embedded within 9th and 10th grade English classes
- Teach Latin roots, prefixes, and suffixes to build academic and SAT vocabulary
- Introduce students to Roman history, mythology, and culture as context for language study
- Collaborate closely with English co-teachers to align content with ELA curriculum goals
- Develop lesson materials, assessments, and vocabulary resources appropriate for high school students
- Track student progress and contribute to grade reporting for the 0.25 credit/semester LOTE designation
- Participate in brief planning meetings with the English department and instructional leadership as needed
Qualifications
Required:
- Currently enrolled in or recently completed a graduate program in Classics, Latin, Ancient History, Linguistics, or a related field
- Strong command of Latin language and Roman history and culture
- Demonstrated ability to make classical content accessible and engaging for secondary students
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills
Preferred:
- Prior teaching, tutoring, or instructional experience with middle or high school students
- Familiarity with SAT vocabulary preparation or academic language development
- Interest in contributing to a school community committed to equity and college access
Schedule and Compensation
- Part-time, in-person position based in Brooklyn, NY
- Approximately 3–5 hours per week of instruction plus planning time
- Competitive hourly or per-session stipend commensurate with experience
- Start date: September 2026
- $50 / hour
