Recruiting for an Operations & Maintenance Technician IV – HVAC (Journey) at the Gene Pumping Plant in Parker Dam, California.
This position utilizes journey-level mechanical and electrical skills, experience, and knowledge in the installation, improvement, diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of general and complex heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems.
The technician will maintain and improve a variety of systems, including air distribution systems, heat exchangers, furnaces, hot/cold deck systems, pneumatic and digital controls, VAV systems, and energy management systems.
The position supports the operational reliability of water and power infrastructure by maintaining safe, efficient, and reliable HVAC systems throughout treatment plants, ozone plants, conveyance and distribution facilities, shops, offices, communication sites, computer rooms, and other commercial/industrial facilities.
Key Job Duties
- Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on commercial and industrial HVAC equipment, components, auxiliary units, pneumatic and digital controls, VAV systems, electrical controls, electronic controls, and energy management systems.
- Troubleshoot HVAC problems, determine appropriate corrective actions, and minimize equipment downtime.
- Perform PM, CM, and improvement work on:

- Evaporative coolers
- Louvers and dampers

- Design, fabricate, and install sheet-metal ducting systems and registers.
- Perform maintenance and improvements on commercial/industrial equipment such as chillers and walk-in refrigerators/freezers.
- Operate heating and air-conditioning equipment according to manuals, specifications, directions, and diagnostic indicators.
- Monitor and interpret equipment performance readings, energy usage, control signals, feedback, and system output measurements.
- Design and/or install new or rebuilt HVAC systems and equipment.
- Perform initial startup procedures and verify proper operation of gauges, instruments, power, water, lubricants, refrigerants, and air pressure.
- Perform preventive maintenance on equipment of varying ages, including replacement of filters, belts, fluids, and chemicals.
- Diagnose, repair, and install electrical and electronic HVAC components, including:
- Relays
- Programmable logic controllers (PLCs)
- Circuit boards
- Various HVAC controls
- Energy conservation systems
- Identify, fabricate, and procure parts required to complete preventive and corrective maintenance activities.
Minimum Qualifications
Education & Experience
Option 1:
High school diploma or GED with a minimum of 6 years of experience, including at least 1 year of commercial/industrial HVAC experience.
OR
Option 2:
High school diploma or GED with attainment of journey-level skills through a recognized HVAC trade training program and/or applicable related experience in an industrial environment.
Additional Expectations
The selected candidate must have skilled HVAC labor and mechanical aptitude and be capable of performing routine maintenance and minor repairs at an O&M Level II.
The individual will support journey-level HVAC technicians as needed while also being capable of working independently with minimal supervision.
Basic electrical safety knowledge and fundamental HVAC knowledge are essential.
Required Knowledge
Knowledge of:
- Commercial and industrial HVAC theories, practices, tools, and materials.
- Heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, and refrigeration systems.

- Water and lubricant analysis as it relates to HVAC mechanical/electrical systems.

- EPA refrigerant recovery and recycling requirements under 40 CFR Part 82, Subpart F.
- Chemicals used for HVAC parts and system cleaning, including coil cleaners and solvents.
- Safe operating techniques and occupational hazards associated with motorized and pneumatic equipment.
- Hazards associated with electrically energized HVAC components.
- Safety practices and regulations for maintaining and repairing HVAC equipment.
Required Skills & Abilities
Ability to:
- Diagnose HVAC equipment and system malfunctions visually and aurally.
- Use, operate, and troubleshoot computerized HVAC systems.
- Troubleshoot equipment and building comfort automation systems.
- Read and interpret sketches, diagrams, manufacturer's manuals, and specifications.
- Develop sketches and diagrams as required for HVAC installations and repairs.
- Use and maintain electrical and mechanical tools and equipment traditionally used in HVAC operations and maintenance.
- Apply and guide others in following safety practices and regulations for inspecting, maintaining, and repairing HVAC equipment.
Preferred / Desired Experience & Requirements
- High school diploma or GED.
- Minimum of 6 years of relevant experience, including at least 1 year of commercial/industrial HVAC experience.
- Journey-level HVAC skills through recognized trade training and/or applicable industrial experience.
- Valid driver's license equivalent to a California Class C license.
- May be required to obtain a driver's license equivalent to a California Class A or B with appropriate commercial endorsements.
- EPA Section 608 Refrigerant Certification — Type I, II, or Universal; Universal preferred.
- Experience with commercial/industrial HVAC systems.
- Experience with chillers, boilers, cooling towers, refrigeration systems, VAV systems, pneumatic controls, digital controls, and HVAC electrical systems.
- Experience with HVAC computerized controls/building automation systems.
- Sheet-metal fabrication and ductwork experience.
- Electrical and electronic troubleshooting experience.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
