Position Overview
The Earthwork and Utility Superintendent leads on-site operations for heavy civil construction projects, including mass excavation, grading, and underground utility installation (water, sewer, and storm systems).
This role is responsible for ensuring the project is completed safely, on schedule, and within budget while managing his crews, subcontractors, equipment, and materials.
Key Responsibilities
Field Leadership
Direct daily operations for earthmoving, excavation, grading, and wet utility installation
Supervise field crews and subcontractors, coordinate daily with general supervisors.
Maintain strong on-site leadership, accountability, and productivity with the foreman.
Scheduling & Coordination
Develop and maintain short- and long-term project schedules with the foreman and project managers.
Coordinate subcontractors, inspectors, and material deliveries
Plan work sequencing to maximize efficiency and minimize downtime
Safety & Compliance
Enforce OSHA standards and company safety policies
Ensure daily safety meetings and job hazard analysis with onsite foreman are completed
Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and project specifications
Quality Control
Read and interpret construction drawings, plans, and specifications
Verify grades, elevations, slopes, and utility alignments
Ensure installations meet project standards and municipal requirements
Resource & Production Management
Track production rates and monitor equipment utilization
Manage on-site labor and control job costs
Collaborate with Project Managers to maintain budgets and forecasts
Qualifications
Experience: 5-10+ years of progressive experience in heavy civil construction, site development, or underground utilities
Education: High School Diploma required; degree in Civil Engineering or Construction Management preferred
Technical Expertise:
-Strong background in mass grading and wet utility installation
-Experience with GPS machine control systems
-Proficiency in project management software (Procore, HeavyJob, MS Project, or similar)
Certifications: OSHA 30-hour certification preferred; valid driver’s license required

Strong leadership and decision-making abilities
Excellent communication with engineers, inspectors, and clients
Proven problem-solving skills in fast-paced field environments
Ability to manage multiple crews and deadlines simultaneously
Compensation & Benefits
Pay range: $62-$65 per hour, depending on experience
