Position Summary
The Yard Hand keeps the company yard organized, safe, and ready for daily operations. This position prepares vehicles, mowers, trailers, and implements for service crews and assists the Service Manager with cleaning, inspections, preventive maintenance, and basic mechanical tasks. Reliability, initiative, and a strong work ethic are essential.
Key Responsibilities
Yard Upkeep and Organization
- Keep the yard, shop, storage areas, fuel area, and workspaces clean, orderly, and free of hazards.
- Return tools, parts, equipment, and supplies to assigned locations and maintain clear access routes.
- Assist with loading, unloading, staging, material handling, trash removal, and general property upkeep.
- Report spills, damage, missing items, security concerns, and unsafe conditions promptly.
Daily Equipment Readiness
- Fuel vehicles and equipment according to company procedures and verify that fuel and fluid levels are ready for work.
- Clean mowers, decks, trailers, implements, and other equipment after use and prepare them for the next shift.
- Complete assigned readiness checks for tires, guards, belts, blades, lights, hitches, and visible leaks or damage.
- Stage vehicles, trailers, tools, and equipment so crews can depart safely and on time.
Maintenance Assistance
- Assist the Service Manager with preventive maintenance, routine service, and minor repairs as trained and directed.
- Help with lubrication, filter or blade changes, tire-pressure checks, battery care, cleaning, and parts replacement.
- Gather tools and parts, maintain a clean work area, and support accurate maintenance and defect records.
- Tag and report damaged or unsafe equipment and do not return it to service without approval.
Crew and Service Support
- Support morning crew departure and end-of-day equipment return, cleanup, and staging.
- Assist with parts, supply, tool, and consumable inventory and notify the Service Manager when stock is low.
- Provide field, delivery, cleanup, or mowing support when assigned and properly trained.
- Follow directions, communicate work status, and complete assigned tasks with urgency and attention to detail.
Qualifications
- Strong work ethic, dependable attendance, punctuality, and willingness to complete physical and sometimes dirty work.
- Mechanical aptitude and interest in learning equipment maintenance, troubleshooting, and safe repair practices.
- Ability to use common hand and shop tools safely after instruction.
- Ability to follow checklists, written and verbal directions, safety procedures, and equipment manuals.
- Good organization, communication, teamwork, initiative, and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently after training and ask questions when a task or condition is unclear.
- Previous landscaping, mowing, equipment, shop, farm, construction, or maintenance experience is preferred.
- A valid driver's license and ability to meet company driving requirements are preferred when driving duties are assigned.
Success Measures
- The yard and shop remain clean, organized, secure, and free of avoidable hazards.
- Vehicles, mowers, trailers, and implements are clean, fueled, staged, and ready when crews need them.
- Assigned maintenance and readiness tasks are completed accurately and on time.
- Damage, defects, missing items, and safety concerns are reported promptly.
- The employee demonstrates dependable attendance, safe work habits, initiative, and steady productivity.
Work Environment and Schedule
- Non-exempt hourly position with early starts and hours that may vary with workload, weather, and season.
- Work is performed primarily in the yard, shop, and outdoors, with occasional field or jobsite assignments.
- The position requires frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, kneeling, climbing, and handling or carrying tools, parts, materials, and equipment.
- Work may involve heat, cold, rain, dust, mud, noise, vibration, fuel, oil, cleaning products, and moving equipment; required safety practices and protective equipment must be used.

Pay: $15.00 - $20.00 per hour
