Reports to: Director of Clinical Operations and Administrator
The Surgical Counselor coordinates and manages all aspects of surgical scheduling following a patient’s exam or evaluation. This role serves as a key liaison between patients, physicians, surgery centers, and the billing team to ensure patients understand their procedure, financial responsibility, insurance coverage, and required pre- and post-operative care.
Coordinate scheduling for ophthalmic procedures including cataract, cornea, glaucoma, and retina surgery
Meet with patients to schedule surgery, pre-operative testing, and post-operative visits
Provide education on procedures, expectations, and pre-operative instructions
Verify insurance benefits and obtain prior authorizations as required
Review financial responsibilities and collect patient payments when applicable
Complete and process surgical documentation and patient consents
Coordinate pre-surgical requirements including medications, equipment, and facility protocols
Communicate necessary information to surgery centers and billing teams
Provide coverage for other surgical schedulers as needed
High school diploma required; college degree preferred
Insurance verification and prior authorization experience required
Knowledge of ophthalmic procedures and terminology preferred
Excellent communication and customer service skills
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced clinical environment
