We are a small team of people who are passionate about advancing our mission. We are looking for a Property Assistant – Carpenter to join our team who shares our drive and motivation.
Position Summary
The Property Assistant – Carpenter is responsible for constructing, inspecting, repairing, modifying, and maintaining the wooden finishes of historic Victorian homes and other structures of the Wilson Historic District (the “District”). This position also supports wide-ranging general maintenance requests across the District.
Principal Accountabilities
- Build, remodel, paint, and stain interior and exterior wooden structures and finishes, including fences, windows, cabinets, doors, and porches, custom millwork: baseboards, crown molding, wainscoting, tape, bed and texture
- Inspect and repair existing wooden and plastics structures and finishes - Procure and maintain inventory of all replacement parts
- Respond to tenant maintenance requests as assigned
- Complete general maintenance, including standard plumbing
- Install data cabling for standard electrical repairs
- Complete special projects as assigned by the Facilities Manager
Skills & Knowledge
- High school diploma or equivalent (preferred)
- Formal carpentry training with residential and commercial experience
- At least 3 years of carpentry experience (preferred)
- Ability to contribute to a safe work environment, including use and storage of power tools; understanding of occupational hazards
- Ability to understand and interpret work orders, blueprints, and manuals
- Ability to take accurate measurements and calculate material needs
- Basic understanding of maintenance and repairs; ability to operate machinery and equipment
- Ability to stay up to date on general industry specifications and general maintenance standards
- Ability to work independently and on a team
- Ability to learn new skills from on-the-job training
- Ability to prioritize projects to complete work in a timely and in a fiscally responsible manner
- Strong work ethic, attention to detail and problem-solving skills
- Good verbal and written communication skills
Environmental Demands
This position also requires the following:
- Work indoors and outdoors in environments that include dust, dirt, odors, noise, and weather extremes (often)
- Stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, squat, and climb (often)
- Work at heights up to three stories on roofs, ladders, and scaffolding (often)
- Work in tight spaces to complete repairs (occasionally)
- Use motor coordination and finger dexterity to operate tools (often)
- Lift and push items up to 90 pounds (often)
- Respond to after-hours emergencies (occasionally)
