GSH Geotechnical, Inc. (GSH) is a geotechnical engineering company located in Murray, Utah. GSH provides soil engineering and materials testing services in and around the Salt Lake City area and neighboring states. GSH is seeking a Field Engineer/Geologist to assist in performing geotechnical investigations in the region. This is a full-time position (part time is also considered) which will include primarily working in the field, logging soils obtained from our auger drill rigs, and/or test pit excavations. Our field engineers/geologists perform at a high level in the field in all weather conditions with some office and laboratory duties.
Job Description
- Work under the supervision of senior engineers and geologists to complete the field portion of our geotechnical investigations.
- Document subsurface conditions on detailed borehole or excavation log sheets.
- Obtain soil samples from drill rigs or excavations and classify in accordance with the United Soil Classification System (USCS).
- Determine locations of the explorations on site plans, utilizing overlays or handheld GPS units.
- Lead a team of drilling staff and/or excavator operators to execute daily field projects.
- Troubleshoot site conditions such as access, utility locations, mechanical failures/breakdowns, etc.
- Assist in completing excavation observations and site visits to confirm conditions with respect to previous geotechnical reports.
- Ensure environmental and other regulations are met in construction and production projects.
- Some travel (less than 2-3 days every 6 months) may be required. Occasional projects require afterhours or weekend fieldwork.
Requirements:
- Degree or current coursework in Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Geology, or Geoscience (preferred).
- Working knowledge of soil types, behavior, and groundwater.
- Ability and desire to obtain a P.E. or P.G. license in the State of Utah (preferred).
- Experience with various drilling techniques (preferred).
- Mechanical troubleshooting (preferred).
- Ability to make impromptu decisions on the fly that balances the needs of the project and company.
- Ability to handle and analyze data.
- Ability to lift 50+ pounds routinely.
- Attention to detail.
- Great communication skills (oral and written).
- Organizational and teamwork ability.
- Valid Driver’s License with clean driving record (required).
