The National Automatic Sprinkler Industry (“NASI”) Welfare and Pension Funds (“Funds”), located in Landover, Maryland is currently seeking an Assistant Executive Director for the Benefits Administration Office (“Assistant Executive Director”), to serve as a senior member of the Fund Office leadership team. The Assistant Executive Director will report directly to the Executive Director and will support the long-term administration, financial stewardship, governance, planning, and strategic priorities of the Funds. This is an in-person position.
The Assistant Executive Director position will focus on senior-level financial oversight, accounting and audit coordination, fund document expertise, project leadership, planning, and leadership support. The Assistant Executive Director will also act on behalf of the Director of Operations in the Director’s absence and will provide support to ensure continuity of leadership and decision-making.
NASI is dedicated to providing healthcare and retirement benefits to individuals in the sprinkler industry union and their families, and the Fund Office administers multiple Taft-Hartley trust funds, including defined benefit pension plans, welfare plans, a defined contribution individual account plan, and education and apprentice training funds.
Responsibilities
The precise job responsibilities will depend on the experience of the selected candidate, but will likely include the following:
- Financial Oversight: Provide senior-level support for the Funds’ accounting, budgeting, financial reporting, audit, and compliance reporting functions to ensure financial and operational accuracy and compliance of the administration of the plans. Work with finance staff, auditors, consultants, and other professionals to support accurate financial records, timely reporting, and appropriate financial controls.
- Strategic planning: Participate in strategic business planning and budgeting process, including frontline responsibility for annual budget. Assist, participate in, and provide oversight and management of the Funds’ strategic and long-term initiatives and projects. Attend and present at BOT meetings, approximately five (5) times a year, as well as various seminars and education meetings for different unions throughout the year.
- Oversee supervision of staff: Provide vision, leadership, guidance, and motivation to approximately six (6) managers and supervisors with approximately 45 collectively bargained direct reports; mentor and develop directors, department managers, and staff through performance management, goal setting, training, and effective employee relations to ensure superior service is consistently provided; develop and implement training programs for managers and staff; ensure collaboration and communication across departments.
- Ensure compliance: Ensure compliance with relevant plan statutes, regulations, and requirements; consult with outside professionals on compliance matters as needed; assist in submission of government mandated forms; remain informed of all plan provisions for all benefit plans; network regularly with professional organizations and colleagues in the industry to stay informed of new regulations, recent events, and/or other situations that could affect NASI.
- Ensure adequate systems and technology: Ensure systems are maintained and updated to support the Funds’ recordkeeping, benefit processing, cybersecurity, and participant service needs; support IT staff with the implementation of new benefits administration systems, tools, and technologies.
- Plan Expertise: Develop and maintain a deep working knowledge of the Funds’ Trust Agreements, Plan Documents, Summary Plan Descriptions, amendments, policies, procedures, and related governing documents. Serve as a leadership resource on plan provisions, document interpretation, and the relationship between Fund documents and administrative practices. Ensure benefit administration follows Plan rules.
- Leadership Support and Acting Authority: Serve as a senior member of the Fund Office leadership team and provide support to the Executive Director on governance, planning, financial, and administrative matters. Provide guidance and support to department leaders on matters involving fund documents, financial implications, cross-functional coordination, or strategic priorities. Act on behalf of the Director of Operations in the Director’s absence, including helping to maintain continuity of leadership, decision-making, issue escalation, and communication. Support a leadership culture focused on accountability, accuracy, service, compliance, and continuous improvement.
Requirements
The ideal candidate will meet the following requirements:
- Minimum of ten years of experience in multiemployer benefit fund administration, nonprofit financial administration, employee benefits, accounting, auditing, compliance, or related leadership roles.
- Bachelor’s degree or commensurate relevant experience required. Advanced degree, accounting background, benefits certification, or related professional credentials preferred.
- Strong understanding of accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, audits, internal controls, and financial governance.
- Experience with Taft-Hartley, collectively bargained, pension, welfare, defined contribution, or other employee benefit fund environments preferred.
- Ability to understand, analyze, and apply plan documents, trust agreements, policies, procedures, and related governing materials.
- Demonstrated leadership experience, including the ability to support senior executives, work with professional advisors, coordinate projects, and make sound recommendations.
- Strong project management and planning skills, including the ability to organize complex initiatives, manage competing priorities, and follow through on open items.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare clear summaries, analyses, recommendations, and leadership materials.
