Position Summary:
A Direct Support Professional (DSP) works with individuals who have Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD). This role focuses on providing tailored support that helps individuals with IDD lead independent, healthy, and fulfilling lives.
This position involves working in both home and community-based settings, closely supporting individuals with daily living activities, social integration, and overall well-being. DSPs play a key role in fostering independence, safety, and inclusion for the people they serve.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Assisting with Daily Living and Personal Care:
- Support with personal hygiene, including bathing, grooming, and dressing.
- Assist with meal preparation and feeding when necessary.
- Remind or assist with medication administration according to the care plan.
- Provide toileting and hygiene assistance while ensuring privacy and dignity.
2. Promoting Independence and Skill Building:
- Help individuals develop life skills such as money management, shopping, and home maintenance.
- Encourage independence in daily living through step-by-step instruction and support.
- Facilitate learning and development of social and communication skills.
- Promote inclusion in social, educational, and recreational activities.
3. Behavioral Support:
- Monitor and assist in managing challenging behaviors using strategies outlined in the individual’s behavior plan.
- Provide emotional support and help individuals develop coping mechanisms for anxiety, frustration, or other needs.
4. Health and Safety Monitoring:
- Observe and report any changes in health, behavior, or emotional well-being to the supervising Program Specialist.
- Assist with mobility needs, including transfers, walking, and wheelchair support.
- Ensure the environment remains safe, clean, and conducive to well-being.
- Support the creation and maintenance of a structured daily routine.
5. Documentation and Reporting:
- Maintain accurate records on activities, health status, progress, and incidents through daily service note submission.
- Submit service notes for each shift with appropriate GPS location verification.
- Document behavior patterns, achievements, and challenges to ensure continuity of care.
- Communicate effectively with family members, supervisors, and other care team members as needed.
6. Community Engagement and Social Integration:
- Support individuals in participating in community events, social activities, and employment opportunities.
- Assist individuals in forming and maintaining relationships with peers and others.
- Facilitate social skill development and help individuals navigate social environments.
7. Health Monitoring:
- Monitor health conditions (e.g., seizures, diabetes, or other chronic issues) and assist with medical appointments and treatments.
- Encourage healthy lifestyle habits, including exercise, nutrition, and general wellness.
8. Team Collaboration and Support:
- Work collaboratively with other staff, including nurses, behavior specialists, and supervisors, to ensure consistent, holistic care.
- Participate in team meetings to review individual progress and make necessary care adjustments.
Qualifications and Candidate Profile:
Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience:
- Prior experience in caregiving or direct support for individuals with IDD is highly desirable.
Clearances and Additional Requirements:
- FBI background check.
- Motor Vehicle Record check.
- Authorization to work in the United States.
- Current First Aid and CPR certification.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to assist with physical tasks, including lifting, transferring, and helping individuals with mobility needs.
- DSPs may work in a variety of settings, including:
– In-home care (supporting individuals in their own homes).
– Community-based programs or recreational centers.
- Some positions may require flexible working hours, including evenings, weekends, and overnight shifts.
- All work must comply with OneWell policies and Pennsylvania labor and healthcare regulations.
